Frequently Asked Questions

How does a steam generator work?

The generator heats water in a stainless steel tank outside the steam room. Steam travels through insulated piping to the steam heads inside the sealed room, and the control on the wall sets the temperature and session time.

What size steam room does the MAX 20 kW cover?

Mr. Steam rates the MAX 20 kW for an adjusted room volume of 483 to 678 cubic feet. From 412 to 482 cubic feet, the MS Super 15 kW is the correct size. From 679 to 822 cubic feet, move to the MAX 24 kW.

How do I calculate my room volume?

Multiply length by width by height in feet. Then adjust for materials: add 0 percent for ceramic or porcelain tile on cement board, add 50 percent for natural stone, marble, glass block or concrete. Add 15 percent for each foot of ceiling above 8 feet, up to 10 feet. Our size calculator applies these adjustments for you.

My room is larger than 964 cubic feet. What then?

The MAX 30 kW is the largest residential Mr. Steam generator. The MAX manual covers connecting two to five MAX generators to one control with a tandem cable, each with its own power supply and plumbing. Send us your room dimensions and construction, and we confirm the sizing with Mr. Steam before quoting.

My steam room is acrylic or another synthetic material. Does that change anything?

Yes. The MAX manual gives two different deductions for acrylic or synthetic rooms, 40 percent in its sizing steps and 15 percent in its chart notes, so we confirm the size with Mr. Steam before quoting. Consult the enclosure manufacturer on steam head placement, and where the material is not heat resistant, Mr. Steam specifies its Acrylic Shield (103938RD round or 103938SQ square) at each steam head.

Why does the MAX need two steam heads?

Mr. Steam requires every MAX generator to be installed with two or more steam heads. Through a single head, too much steam leaves one point and can cause scalding. The 3/4 inch steam line runs to a tee fitting and splits into equal runs so each head receives the same amount of steam. Every control ships with one steam head, so we add a second in the same style and finish to your quote.

How is the MAX 20 kW different from the MS and MS Super series?

The MS series runs from 5 to 9 kW for rooms up to 257 cubic feet, and the MS Super series from 10 to 15 kW for rooms up to 482 cubic feet; both can be floor or wall mounted. The MAX series runs from 20 to 30 kW for rooms from 483 to 964 cubic feet, in a floor-standing cabinet 25.125 inches wide, 20.75 inches high and 7.875 inches deep, and it requires two or more steam heads.

What is Express Steam?

Express Steam is a factory-built version of the same generator with a low-power element and thermostat that keep the tank water warm between sessions, so steam reaches the room sooner. It is a separate factory-built unit, not a part added later. Choose Express Steam or Not sure in the configurator, and we quote accordingly.

How long does a steam session run?

You set the session on the control. The generator has a 60-minute electronic countdown shutdown with a 75-minute limiting safety back-up, so it cannot run unattended indefinitely.

How much water does it use?

Mr. Steam lists about 2.7 gallons of water for a 20-minute session on the MAX 20 kW.

Which control and steam head should I choose?

Every control ships with a steam head, and you choose the style in the configurator; the second head we add matches it. The iSteamX is a 7-inch touchscreen with saved user profiles. The iTempo is a compact round or square control. The TempoFlex is a wireless, rechargeable glass control. The TempoTouch is a single-button control with no display. The Aroma steam head is standard; the Linear is a 16-inch flush head that must be planned before the wall is tiled.

Can I control the steam room from my phone?

Yes, with the SteamLinx Wi-Fi module, which you can add in the configurator. We confirm it pairs with the control you choose before ordering.

Can I add lighting, music or aromatherapy?

Yes. The configurator offers ChromaTherapy lighting, MusicTherapy speakers and an AromaTherapy pump, which wire back to the generator, so decide on them before the walls are closed. Aroma oils go into the reservoir built into the steam head.

Where can the generator be installed?

Outside the steam room, indoors, in a heated and ventilated room such as a basement or heated attic, within 60 feet of insulated steam piping from the steam room. It must stand upright on a solid, level floor, and Mr. Steam states it must not be hung on a wall. It cannot go in a vanity or other small enclosed space, under the steam room bench, outdoors, or anywhere water could freeze. For service, Mr. Steam recommends 18 inches on the left side, 21 inches above, 24 inches in front and 12 inches on the plumbing side.

What electrical service does it need?

A dedicated 240V single-phase circuit drawing 84 amps, with 3 AWG copper conductors rated 90°C (Mr. Steam's planning guide lists 2 AWG), a separate breaker, and a disconnect within sight of the generator. Your licensed electrician sizes the breaker and wire to local code.

Is a 208V, three-phase or 480V version available?

Yes. The MAX 20 kW is made for 208V single phase, where it draws 97 amps, and in three-phase versions at 208V, 240V and 480V. Tell us your service when you request pricing and we quote the matching unit.

What plumbing is required?

A 3/8 inch cold water supply with a shut-off valve, a 3/4 inch steam line of insulated brass or copper from the generator to a tee fitting and on to each steam head, pitched 1/4 inch per foot toward the steam heads or the generator, and a 1 inch drain line. No valve may be installed in the steam line, and the drain and safety valve lines must not be connected together. A licensed plumber completes the work.

Where do the steam heads go?

Mr. Steam specifies 6 to 12 inches above the floor, or 6 inches above the tub edge in a tub enclosure, with the heads spaced evenly through the room. Keep each head at least 12 inches from a wall to reduce noise, away from where bathers could touch it, and where steam will not hit the door seals. Each steam pipe needs a 1.5 inch hole through the wall.

Where does the control go?

Mr. Steam controls can be mounted inside or outside the steam room. If the control is outside, Mr. Steam requires a Remote Temperature Probe (MSTS) inside the steam room, and we add it to your quote. The standard control cable is 30 feet, a 60-foot cable is available, and Mr. Steam recommends running it in a dedicated 1 inch conduit away from power lines and hot piping.

What does the steam room itself need?

Full walls, ceiling, floor and door, with a gasketed door recommended. Surfaces must be heat resistant, water resistant and non-porous, such as tile or marble. Provide a floor drain and nonslip flooring, keep heating, venting and air conditioning devices out of the room, and use double-paned tempered glass for any window. Mr. Steam recommends a ceiling no higher than 8 feet.

How is the generator maintained?

Mr. Steam recommends opening the manual drain valve fully every two months, or more often in hard water areas. The AutoFlush included on every Sauna Republic quote does this automatically about two hours after each session. Mr. Steam also recommends testing the water supply before installation.

Why does the quote include a drip pan?

Mr. Steam strongly recommends a drip pan in the unlikely event of a plumbing leak. The MAX generator stands inside the pan, which drains by gravity through a 3/4 inch fitting, so your plumber connects it to a drain according to local code.

What does the warranty cover?

Mr. Steam provides a limited lifetime warranty on residential generators installed in the United States and Canada. Claims within two years of purchase include in-home service, parts and labor; after two years, the warranty covers parts. Controls and accessories carry their own warranties. The full terms are on the Resources tab.

Is Sauna Republic an authorized Mr. Steam dealer?

Yes. Sauna Republic is an authorized Mr. Steam dealer. This matters because the Mr. Steam warranty excludes generators bought from unauthorized online sellers.

Can I use the MAX 20 kW in a commercial steam room?

No. The MAX series is for residential use only, and commercial use voids the warranty. For spas, gyms and hotels, see the Mr. Steam CT Day Spa and Mr. Steam CX commercial generators.

How does delivery work?

The generator ships as a parcel, and Mr. Steam lists a supplier lead time of 96 hours. We confirm current availability and the delivery date for your full system when we send your quote.

Can I use HSA or FSA funds?

Steam generators are not HSA or FSA eligible.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. See our financing options.

What is your return policy?

Please review our return policy, or contact us before ordering with any questions.

How do I get pricing?

Build your system in the configurator on this page, or request pricing directly. We reply with a written quote for the generator, control, both steam heads, AutoFlush and drip pan. You can also call (302) 273-0861 or email info@thesaunarepublic.com.

Monogrammed items — Allow an additional 3–5 business days of processing time. This applies to expedited orders as well.

PO Boxes, APO & FPO — Textile orders cannot be shipped to PO Boxes or to APO/FPO military addresses. Please provide a street address at checkout.

Mixed orders — If your order includes a sauna, cold plunge, heater, or accessory, the whole order ships free regardless of the textile subtotal.

Textile orders ship separately from sauna and cold plunge shipments and may arrive on a different date, even when purchased together.

How Freight Delivery Works

Large items (saunas, cold plunges, hot tubs, and most floor-standing heaters and wood-burning stoves) ship via LTL freight. Smaller items (wall-mounted heaters, accessories, wellness devices, Lumaflex, red light towers, robes and textiles) ship via UPS, FedEx, or USPS.

1. We ship your order. Tracking is emailed to you with the estimated delivery timeline.

2. The carrier calls you. The freight company calls to schedule a delivery appointment with you from its available dates and time windows.

3. Curbside delivery. Delivery is to the curb via semi-truck with liftgate (when available). You'll need a plan to move it from the curb to its final location.

4. Sign and inspect. You must be present to sign. Inspect for damage before signing — note any issues on the delivery receipt.

Unloading Your Sauna

Unless inside delivery has been arranged in advance, the driver delivers to the curb only. You are responsible for moving the product to its final location. Have equipment and help arranged before delivery day.

Rent a forklift — Most common choice. Requires forklift extensions. ~$150–300/day.

Hire a tilt tow truck — Flatbed tow with tilt/slide functionality. ~$200–400.

Hire a rigging/moving crew — Professional movers with equipment. Get quotes in advance.

Tilt tow delivery (Dundalk only) — An alternative for sites where a forklift can't be used. Request it when you place your order; contact us for current pricing.

Inside delivery (Clearlight only) — Delivery into your garage, backyard, or a room of your choice, for an additional fee. It must be arranged before the sauna ships, and we'll ask for photos of the delivery path. The boxes are placed, not unpacked or assembled. Requests made after shipment cost more and depend on the carrier.

Clearlight saunas ship in flat panels, not pre-assembled crates. Most can be carried inside by two people without heavy equipment. Dundalk saunas ship in crates longer than 92" weighing 800–1,800 lbs. Liftgate service is not available for these shipments, and most require a forklift with fork extensions to unload.

Damage Claims

If your order arrives damaged, we'll get you a replacement as quickly as possible.

1. Inspect packaging for visible damage before signing.

2. Note damage on the delivery receipt, describing exactly what you see (for example, "crate corner crushed" or "panel scratched"), and have the driver sign. If the packaging is damaged but you can't inspect the contents, write "possible concealed damage" before signing.

3. Do not refuse the delivery unless we ask you to.

4. Take photos of packaging and product damage.

5. Email photos to info@thesaunarepublic.com with your order number within 24 hours.

6. We file the claim and ship your replacement.

Damage must be reported within 24 hours of delivery with photos. Claims filed after 24 hours may not be eligible for a free replacement. Always note visible damage on the delivery receipt — even if it seems minor.

Carriers & Address Info

We reserve the right to select the carrier for all shipments.

Small items (wall-mounted heaters, accessories, wellness devices, red light towers) — UPS or FedEx

Robes & textiles — FedEx Ground. Street addresses only, no PO Boxes or APO/FPO.

Large items (saunas, cold plunges, hot tubs, and most floor-standing heaters and wood-burning stoves) — LTL freight carriers

Lumaflex devices — UPS, FedEx, or USPS

Once large items ship, the delivery address cannot be changed, and the delivery appointment is arranged directly between you and the carrier. If an item is returned due to an incorrect address, you're responsible for shipping costs both ways. If freight delivery fails because the carrier couldn't access your property, it's treated as a return per our return policy.

Remote Areas & Special Locations

Alaska, Hawaii & Puerto Rico — Contact Us Before Purchase

Free shipping does not apply to these locations (except Lumaflex — ships free nationwide). Contact us for a custom shipping quote before ordering. Orders placed without prior approval may be cancelled.

APO/FPO addresses: We ship most items to military addresses, subject to USPS restrictions. Additional fees may apply. Robes and textiles cannot be shipped to APO/FPO or PO Box addresses.

Remote/hard-to-reach areas: Additional fees may apply. We'll contact you before shipping if your location requires special arrangements.

Concealed damage (not visible until unboxing) must be reported within 24 hours of delivery. Missed delivery appointments may incur redelivery fees. If an undamaged, correct shipment is refused, return freight, redelivery, and storage charges are the customer's responsibility, and the order is treated as a return.

Payment Processing Fees

Applies to all refunds and cancellations initiated by the customer.

Processing Fees Are Not Returned to Us

When you pay by card, our payment processor charges a fee at the time of purchase. Under their terms, that fee is not returned to us when an order is later refunded — the cost stands whether or not the sale completes.

For any return or cancellation initiated by the customer, the processing fee charged on the original transaction is therefore deducted from the refund. This is currently 2.9% of the order total plus $0.30. It is not a fee we retain — it is a cost already paid to the processor.

Where a brand-specific restocking fee also applies, both are deducted.

No Processing Fee Is Deducted When the Fault Is Ours

Products that arrive damaged or defective.

Warranty claims.

Orders we cancel, or errors on our part.

Orders we are unable to fulfil.

Paying by Bank Transfer

Bank transfer and ACH payments carry no processing fee, so nothing is deducted if the order is later refunded. If you would prefer to pay this way, tell us before checkout and we will send a bank transfer invoice instead.

Backorder Cancellation

Orders containing backordered items are subject to a 6% cancellation fee as we are charged by our payment processor when backorders are cancelled. All lead times are estimates and subject to change.

HSA/FSA Purchases

Our standard return policy applies to all HSA/FSA purchases. Products with brand-specific exceptions follow those policies. There is no IRS requirement that HSA/FSA purchases be final sale.

HSA/FSA refunds are processed back to your original HSA/FSA card within 3–10 business days. Truemed cannot redirect refunds to a different payment method.

HSA holders: Notify your custodian to treat the original purchase as a "mistaken distribution" under IRS Notice 2004-50. Returned funds are not subject to income tax or penalties.

FSA holders: The refund goes back to your FSA plan via the original card. If your plan year has ended, the use-it-or-lose-it rule may apply. FSA holders should be especially sure of their purchase before buying.

Processing fees: HSA/FSA payments are processed by card and carry the same non-refundable processing fee described above.

Damage Claims

If your order arrives damaged, we will resolve it as quickly as possible.

1. Inspect packaging for visible damage before signing.

2. Note damage on delivery receipt — write "damaged" and have the driver sign.

3. Take photos of packaging and product damage.

4. Email photos to info@thesaunarepublic.com with your order number within 24 hours.

5. We handle the claim and arrange replacement.

Clearlight products: Do not refuse delivery — accept, document, and report to us. We file the freight claim and arrange replacement. Concealed damage must be reported within 15 calendar days. See Clearlight policy for full details.

Lumaflex products: Email photos within 24 hours and we arrange a replacement under the manufacturer warranty.

HealthyLine products: Report any damage within 48 hours of delivery with photos. We coordinate the replacement with HealthyLine; if the product arrived damaged or defective, replacement and shipping are covered at no cost. See HealthyLine policy for full details.

Revive Plunge products: Inspect the shipment and note any damage on the bill of lading before signing. Concealed damage must be reported within 24 hours of delivery. We report the damage to Revive Plunge and the carrier and coordinate the claim. See Revive Plunge policy for full details.

Description

The Mr. Steam MAX 20 kW (model MX4R2401) is the first model in the MAX series, rated for steam rooms with an adjusted room volume of 483 to 678 cubic feet. It stands on the floor of a nearby ventilated room and sends steam through insulated piping to two or more steam heads inside the steam room.

Sized for the Large Residential Steam Room

A tiled steam room 9 feet long, 8 feet wide and 8 feet high measures 576 cubic feet, which falls inside this generator's range. Size by adjusted volume, not floor area: Mr. Steam adds 50 percent for natural stone, marble, glass block or concrete, and 15 percent for each foot of ceiling above 8 feet. The same 576 cubic foot room finished in marble becomes 864 cubic feet, which calls for the MAX 30 kW instead. Use the steam generator size calculator to check your room before you request pricing.

Two Steam Heads, Evenly Spaced

Mr. Steam requires every MAX generator to be installed with two or more steam heads. A 3/4 inch steam line runs from the generator to a tee fitting and splits into equal runs to each head, so the same amount of steam reaches both, and the heads are spaced evenly through the room. A MAX generator must never run through a single steam head. Every Mr. Steam control ships with one steam head, so we add a second steam head in the matching style and finish to your quote.

Choose Your Control and Steam Head

The generator is sold without a control. The configurator on this page lets you choose the control (iSteamX, iTempo, TempoFlex or TempoTouch), the steam head style (Aroma, Designer Round, Designer Square or Linear) and one of 13 finishes, then add ChromaTherapy lighting, MusicTherapy speakers, an AromaTherapy pump or SteamLinx Wi-Fi. These accessories wire back to the generator, so decide on them before the walls are closed.

Built for Long Service

The tank is stainless steel, and the large-diameter industrial heating element can be removed for service. A microprocessor and electronic water-level control manage the fill, AutoSteam, standard on every Mr. Steam generator, keeps the flow of steam even, and a full-port 1 inch drain valve makes flushing straightforward. Every Sauna Republic quote includes the MAX AutoFlush, which drains the generator about two hours after each session, and the MAX drip pan the generator stands in.

Installation Planning

The generator measures 25.125 inches wide, 20.75 inches high and 7.875 inches deep and weighs 67 pounds. It must stand upright on a solid, level floor; Mr. Steam states that the MAX must not be hung on a wall. Place it in a heated basement, heated attic or other ventilated room within 60 feet of insulated steam piping from the steam room, but never in a vanity or other small enclosed space, under the steam room bench, outdoors or anywhere water could freeze. A licensed electrician runs a dedicated 240V circuit (84 amps, 3 AWG copper), and a licensed plumber connects the water supply, steam line and drain.

Express Steam Option

A factory-built Express Steam version of the same generator adds a low-power element and thermostat that keep the tank water warm between sessions, so steam reaches the room sooner. Choose it in the configurator, or choose Not sure to have both versions quoted.

Limited Lifetime Warranty

Mr. Steam covers residential generators installed in the United States and Canada against defects in materials and workmanship for their lifetime. Claims made within two years of purchase include in-home service, parts and labor; after two years, the warranty covers parts. Request pricing or build your system in the configurator above.
