Frequently Asked Questions

What is a peshtemal?

It's the traditional Turkish hammam cloth — flat-woven rather than looped like terry, and used in Turkish bathhouses for centuries before terry existed. Flat weaving means no pile, which is why a peshtemal packs down small, dries fast, and never feels heavy on the shoulders. This robe is that cloth cut into a wearable garment, in its classic striped form.

What is it made of?

100% Turkish cotton, woven in Turkey.

How is this different from your terry robes?

Different tools for different problems. Terry has a looped pile that holds a lot of water — maximum absorbency, maximum warmth, slow to dry. This is flat-woven with no pile — lighter on the body, far faster to dry, much less bulk. Choose terry for cold-climate cabins and winter contrast therapy. Choose this for hot climates, humid sessions, steam, back-to-back rounds, and travel.

How is it different from your plain Peshtemal Turkish Robe?

Same flat-woven Turkish cotton and the same lightweight, quick-drying behavior. Two differences: this one carries the classic hammam stripe rather than a solid color with contrast trim, and it's $20 less. If you like the traditional look — or you're buying several and want them easy to tell apart from a solid — this is the one.

Why is it striped?

Because that's what peshtemal has always looked like. Striped weaving is the traditional hammam pattern, running back centuries in Turkish bathhouse textiles. It isn't a decorative afterthought — it's the original form of the cloth.

Does a peshtemal robe absorb enough?

Yes, though differently. Flat-woven cotton absorbs less per pass than terry — there's no pile holding a reservoir of water. What it does instead is wick moisture across the fabric and release it to the air quickly, so it never reaches the saturated, heavy state a terry robe hits after a few rounds. Over a long multi-round session, that turnover matters more than raw capacity.

Why does fast drying matter between sauna rounds?

Because you're putting the robe back on repeatedly. A terry robe absorbs beautifully on round one, holds that water, and is noticeably damp by round three. This one sheds moisture to the air in the gap between rounds, so the robe you put on for the third round is closer to the one you started with.

Is this a good robe for a steam room?

It's the better choice of the two weaves. Heavy terry soaks through in saturated steam within minutes and turns into a hot wet weight. A flat-woven peshtemal handles high humidity far better and recovers once you're back in ambient air. It still doesn't go inside the steam room itself.

Can I wear it inside the sauna?

No. Never wear a robe inside a heated sauna room. Fabric traps heat against the skin and blocks the evaporative cooling your body depends on at high temperature — it raises your core temperature faster than it should and removes your ability to feel how hot you actually are. The robe comes off at the door and goes back on when you step out.

Can I wear it into a steam room?

No, for the same reason. Being lighter than terry doesn't change the physics — any layer between your skin and the air interferes with how your body sheds heat. Hang it outside and put it on during the cool-down.

What about the cold plunge?

Don't wear it in. You want the robe dry and waiting so it can pull water off you the moment you come out. It's a good plunge-side robe precisely because it recovers fast between rounds.

So when do I actually wear it?

Walking to the sauna, plunge, or steam room. Between rounds during the cool-down. And through the rewarming stretch after your last round. Off at the threshold, on the moment you exit.

Will it keep me warm enough after a cold plunge?

Less than terry, honestly. This is a light, breathable fabric and it insulates less. In a warm room or a hot climate that's exactly what you want — terry can feel stifling in summer. In a cold garage or an outdoor setup in February, terry is the better call for the rewarming phase. Match the robe to your room.

Is it too thin for winter use?

For an unheated outdoor setup in a cold climate, yes — we'd point you at our Turkish Cotton terry robes instead. For an indoor sauna in a heated house, it's fine year-round. The limiting factor is the temperature of the room you're cooling down in, not the season.

What colors does it come in?

One colorway: Black/White stripe.

What size does it come in?

One size. The kimono-style wrap cut is designed to fit a wide range of bodies without a size run — the belt does the adjusting.

Will one size actually fit me?

For most adults, yes — it's a generous wrap rather than a fitted garment, and it's photographed on a range of body types. If you're at either extreme of the height or build range and you want exact measurements before ordering, call us at (302) 273-0861 and we'll pull them rather than have you guess.

Is it a men's or women's robe?

Neither specifically. One size, unisex kimono cut, no gendered detailing.

What's the collar style?

A kimono-style V-neck wrap rather than a shawl collar. It sits flatter and lighter against the neck, which suits the weight of the fabric.

Does it have pockets?

Yes, patch pockets at the hip.

Does it come with a belt?

Yes, a matching self-tie belt in the same striped cloth.

Does it have a hood?

No.

Is it good for travel or a gym bag?

It's among the best robes we carry for that. Flat-woven cotton compresses far smaller than terry and weighs less, so it fits in a bag a plush robe would fill on its own. If you're using a public bathhouse, a gym sauna, or a hotel spa, this is the one to pack.

Does it work outside the sauna room?

It does. The same properties that suit it to a humid cool-down — breathable, quick-drying, light — make it a natural poolside and beach layer. Plenty of people buy it for a sauna routine and end up using it all summer.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash cold to warm with a gentle laundry detergent. Dry on low to medium heat.

Will the stripes fade or bleed?

Washing at the cooler end of the range and drying on low protects the contrast best. We'd suggest washing it separately for the first cycle or two, then with like colors. Avoid bleach on any patterned cotton.

Should I wash it before first use?

Yes. A first wash removes manufacturing finish and opens up the weave, which improves how the fabric moves moisture. Flat-woven cotton also softens noticeably over the first several washes — it starts crisper than terry and breaks in over time.

Why shouldn't I use fabric softener?

Softener leaves a waxy residue on cotton fibers that blocks moisture from moving into and through the fabric. On a weave whose entire advantage is moisture turnover, that's the fastest way to ruin what you paid for. Skip it. If the robe ever feels stiff or stops wicking, run it through a wash with no detergent and no softener to strip buildup.

Will it shrink?

Natural cotton relaxes slightly across the first few wash cycles. Washing at the cooler end of the range and drying low-to-medium keeps that minimal. Because this is a one-size garment, follow the care instructions rather than experimenting with hot water.

Can I tumble dry it?

Yes, low to medium heat. It dries fast enough that line-drying is genuinely practical too — often faster than a full dryer cycle for terry.

How do I dry it between sessions?

Hang it fully open with airflow on both sides. This weave dries fast enough that a well-ventilated hook will usually have it ready before your next session without any dryer at all.

Will it get musty from repeated sauna use?

Less readily than terry, because it dries faster and spends less time damp — damp cotton is what mildew wants. It still isn't immune. Hang it open after every session, wash it regularly, and never store a used robe inside the sauna cabin.

How often should I wash it with heavy sauna use?

Every few sessions for regular use, and immediately if it picks up any odor. It's absorbing sweat, not just shower water.

How many should I own?

One is more workable here than with terry, precisely because it dries fast. If you sauna most days, two is still the comfortable answer. For a couple, one each.

Does it coordinate with your other Kassatex textiles?

The black and white stripe is a neutral that sits alongside almost any Kassatex bath collection. Call us and we'll suggest towel lines that work with it.

Do you supply spas, hotels, gyms, and bathhouses?

Regularly, and this is the volume pick in our Kassatex line. It's the lowest price point, one size removes the size-mix problem entirely, and fast drying shortens laundry turnaround between guests. Call (302) 273-0861 or email customercare@thesaunarepublic.com with your quantity and we'll quote it.

Why would a facility choose this over a terry robe?

Cost per unit, inventory simplicity, and laundry throughput. One size means no dead stock in the wrong run, faster drying means fewer robes needed to cover the same guest volume, and less bulk means more per shelf. Terry still feels more luxurious to a guest in a cold climate — it's a genuine trade-off, not a clear win either way.

Is this robe HSA/FSA eligible?

No. HSA and FSA eligibility applies to qualifying wellness equipment such as saunas and cold plunges, not to apparel or textiles.

What's the return policy?

Robes follow our standard return policy — unused and in original packaging. Please review our return policy for full details.

How long does shipping take?

Robes ship via ground carrier and typically arrive within a few business days of leaving the warehouse. If you need it by a specific date, call us at (302) 273-0861 and we'll check lead times before you order.

Who do I call with questions?

We're available seven days a week at (302) 273-0861 or customercare@thesaunarepublic.com. Happy to talk through weave choice, fit, or building a full textile set for a sauna room or plunge area.

Monogrammed items — Allow an additional 3–5 business days of processing time. This applies to expedited orders as well.

How Freight Delivery Works

Large items (saunas, cold plunges, hot tubs) ship via LTL freight. Smaller items (heaters, accessories, wellness devices, Lumaflex, red light towers, robes and textiles) ship via UPS, FedEx, or USPS.

1. We ship your order. Tracking is emailed to you with the estimated delivery timeline.

2. The carrier calls you. The freight company calls to schedule your delivery appointment. You pick the date and time window.

3. Curbside delivery. Delivery is to the curb via semi-truck with liftgate (when available). You'll need a plan to move it from the curb to its final location.

4. Sign and inspect. You must be present to sign. Inspect for damage before signing — note any issues on the delivery receipt.

Unloading Your Sauna

The driver delivers to the curb only. You are responsible for moving the product to its final location. Have equipment and help arranged before delivery day.

Rent a forklift — Most common choice. Requires forklift extensions. ~$150–300/day.

Hire a tilt tow truck — Flatbed tow with tilt/slide functionality. ~$200–400.

Hire a rigging/moving crew — Professional movers with equipment. Get quotes in advance.

Tilt tow service (Dundalk only) — Available for $750. Contact us to add to your order.

Clearlight saunas ship in flat panels, not pre-assembled crates. Most can be carried inside by two people without heavy equipment. Dundalk saunas ship in crates exceeding 92" and 800–1,600 lbs — liftgate service is not available for these shipments.

Damage Claims

If your order arrives damaged, we'll get you a replacement as quickly as possible.

1. Inspect packaging for visible damage before signing.

2. Note damage on the delivery receipt — write "damaged" and have the driver sign.

3. Take photos of packaging and product damage.

4. Email photos to info@thesaunarepublic.com with your order number within 24 hours.

5. We file the claim and ship your replacement.

Damage must be reported within 24 hours of delivery with photos. Claims filed after 24 hours may not be eligible for a free replacement. Always note visible damage on the delivery receipt — even if it seems minor.

Carriers & Address Info

We reserve the right to select the carrier for all shipments.

Small items (heaters, accessories, wellness devices, red light towers) — UPS or FedEx

Robes & textiles — FedEx Ground. Street addresses only, no PO Boxes or APO/FPO.

Large items (saunas, cold plunges, hot tubs) — LTL freight carriers

Lumaflex devices — UPS, FedEx, or USPS

Once large items ship, we cannot change addresses or schedule specific delivery dates. If an item is returned due to an incorrect address, you're responsible for shipping costs both ways. If freight delivery fails because the carrier couldn't access your property, it's treated as a return per our return policy.

Remote Areas & Special Locations

Alaska, Hawaii & Puerto Rico — Contact Us Before Purchase

Free shipping does not apply to these locations (except Lumaflex — ships free nationwide). Contact us for a custom shipping quote before ordering. Orders placed without prior approval may be cancelled.

APO/FPO addresses: We ship most items to military addresses, subject to USPS restrictions. Additional fees may apply. Robes and textiles cannot be shipped to APO/FPO or PO Box addresses.

Remote/hard-to-reach areas: Additional fees may apply. We'll contact you before shipping if your location requires special arrangements.

Description

Kassatex Striped Peshtemal Turkish Robe: The Traditional Cloth, in Its Original Form

Before terry existed, Turkish bathhouses used peshtemal — a flat-woven cotton cloth, striped, light enough to stay comfortable in a room full of steam. This robe is that cloth, unchanged in principle: 100% Turkish cotton, flat-woven with no pile, cut into a kimono wrap with a V-neck collar, wide sleeves, patch pockets, and a self-tie belt in the same striped fabric. At $100 it's also the most accessible way into the line.

No Pile Is the Whole Design

Terry gets its absorbency from a looped pile that holds water like a sponge. Flat weaving removes the pile entirely, and everything follows from that. The robe weighs less on your shoulders. It compresses to a fraction of the bulk. And it dries at a rate a plush robe simply can't match, because there's no reservoir of trapped water to evaporate out.

Turnover Beats Capacity Over a Long Session

Absorbency is the wrong single number to judge a sauna robe by. Terry holds more water per pass — true, and it matters on a single use. But a session is four transitions, not one, and what determines performance on the fourth is how much the robe released during the gaps. Flat-woven cotton wicks moisture across the fabric and hands it to the air quickly. By round three you're putting on something close to what you started with, not something damp and heavy.

Built for Heat and Humidity

Two situations where this beats terry outright. Steam, where saturated air soaks a plush robe within minutes and leaves you carrying a hot wet weight — flat weave handles high humidity far better and recovers once you're back in ambient air. And hot climates or summer sessions, where heavy terry over a body still radiating heat is simply too much fabric. Breathability isn't a nice-to-have in those conditions. It's the requirement.

Off at the Threshold, On at the Exit

Never wear it inside a heated sauna room, a steam room, or a cold plunge. Being lighter than terry doesn't change the physics — any layer between skin and air interferes with how your body sheds heat, drives core temperature up faster than it should, and takes away your ability to feel how hot you actually are. The robe hangs outside. You wear it walking out, between rounds, and through the rewarming stretch afterward.

Where Terry Still Wins

We'd rather tell you than have you find out. In a cold garage or an outdoor cabin in February, terry insulates better through the rewarming phase and this robe will feel thin. If your setup is cold-climate and your priority is warmth after a plunge, buy the Turkish Cotton Robe instead. If your setup is indoor, warm, humid, or you run long multi-round sessions, this is the better tool — and it costs $50 less.

The Stripe Is the Point

Striped weaving is the traditional hammam pattern, running back centuries in Turkish bathhouse textiles. It isn't decoration applied to a modern garment; it's the original form of the cloth. The black-on-white pinstripe reads as a soft pale grey from across a room and stays neutral against almost any bathroom, sauna room, or poolside setting.

One Size, Which Is a Feature

The kimono wrap is cut generously and the belt does the adjusting, so there's no size run to get wrong and no returns over fit. For facilities that matters even more than at home: one size means no dead stock in the wrong run, faster drying means shorter laundry turnaround, and less bulk means more robes per shelf. Combined with the lowest price in our Kassatex line, it's the practical choice for volume.

It Doesn't Stay in the Sauna Room

The same properties that suit it to a humid cool-down — breathable, quick-drying, packs small — make it a natural poolside and beach layer. Plenty of people buy it for a sauna routine and end up using it all summer.
