Frequently Asked Questions

What are these towels made of?

90% combed Aegean Turkish cotton blended with 10% Pima cotton, woven in Turkey at 650 GSM.

What does the Pima cotton add?

Softness and strength. Pima is an extra-long-staple cotton — its fibers are longer than standard upland cotton, which produces a smoother yarn with fewer exposed fiber ends. Blended at 10% into an Aegean base, it's enough to change the hand feel noticeably without giving up the absorbency and durability the Turkish cotton brings.

What does 650 GSM mean?

Grams per square meter — the weight of the fabric. 650 is a genuine mid-weight: dense enough to absorb properly, light enough to dry in reasonable time. Kassatex describes these as airy and medium weight, and the Pima content is why they feel lighter than the number suggests.

How do these compare to your Hammam Turkish Towels?

Same weight, same origin, different priorities. Hammam is 100% combed Aegean cotton in a waffle-terry weave — textured, faster-drying, built for turnover. Pergamon is a Pima blend in a conventional terry — softer, airier, more comfortable against skin. Hammam is the better bench towel; Pergamon is the better towel to dry off with.

Which one should I buy for my sauna?

Honestly, a mix. Hammam for the bench towel you sit on, because it dries faster between rounds and gets the hardest use. Pergamon for the towel waiting outside for after your plunge or shower, because that's the moment softness actually registers. If you only want one, Hammam edges it for sauna use specifically.

Is there a difference in certification between the two?

Yes. Pergamon carries OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, certificate 21.HUS.51051 from Hohenstein — the finished textile tested against 1,000+ harmful substances. Hammam carries MADE IN GREEN, which includes that same testing plus verification of the production facilities. MADE IN GREEN is the broader label.

Do I take a towel into the sauna?

Yes. Unlike a robe, a towel belongs inside the room — you sit on it. In Finnish practice that's not optional: bare skin on hot wood is uncomfortable, sweat soaks into the bench and shortens the life of the timber, and in any shared sauna a bench towel is the basic hygiene standard.

Which size works as a bench towel?

The bath towel at 30" x 56". That's two inches longer than our Hammam bath towel, which is genuinely useful when you're sitting on a lower bench and want the towel to stay under you rather than creeping.

How many towels does a session actually use?

Three, doing different jobs. A bath towel to sit on inside the room. A second bath towel kept dry outside for after the plunge or shower. And a hand towel for wiping sweat off your face and neck between rounds. One towel trying to do all three ends up soaked by the second round.

What's the washcloth for?

Face and neck. Wet it with cold water and hold it against your face during a hot round — it's the oldest trick in sauna practice for extending your time comfortably. Also useful as a cold compress on the back of the neck during the cool-down.

Are these good after a cold plunge?

Very. After cold immersion, evaporation keeps stealing heat long after you're out of the tub, so getting water off your skin fast is the highest-leverage move in the rewarming phase. 650 GSM handles it in one pass, and the Pima content means the towel doing that job feels better against cold skin than a coarser one would.

Can I use them in a steam room?

Yes, as a bench towel. Bear in mind a conventional terry soaks through faster in saturated air than a waffle weave does — if steam is your main use, our Hammam towels handle the humidity better.

What sizes are available?

Bath Towel at 30" x 56", Hand Towel at 18" x 28", and Washcloth at 13" x 13".

Is there a bath sheet?

Not in this collection as we carry it. If you want something larger for wrapping, call us at (302) 273-0861 and we'll point you at an alternative.

What colors are available?

Six: White, Avena, Freshwater Blue, Platinum, Persian Blue, and Powder Pink.

Which color makes sense for a sauna room?

Practically, a mid-tone or darker. Hard water and repeated use eventually cause mineral staining, and Persian Blue or Platinum hide it in a way White and Powder Pink won't. Avena reads warmest against cedar or hemlock.

What's the difference between Freshwater Blue and White?

Very little at a glance — Freshwater Blue is a cool near-white with a faint blue cast rather than an obvious blue. If you're ordering to match existing towels, ask us to confirm rather than judging from a swatch on screen.

Does the bath towel have a hanger loop?

Yes, sewn in. That matters more for sauna use than in a bathroom — a towel that hangs fully open dries between rounds, and a sewn-in loop means you can hang it on any hook by the cabin door.

How do I wash them?

Machine wash cold. Dry on low to medium heat. Do not bleach.

Why no bleach, even on the white ones?

Because bleach breaks down cotton fibers, and on a towel washed twice a week that shortens its life considerably. It also yellows white cotton over time rather than whitening it. Wash whites separately with a normal detergent instead — they'll stay whiter longer than they would with bleach.

What about acne washes and skincare products?

This is the one that catches people out. Benzoyl peroxide and hydrogen peroxide — both common in acne treatments, whitening products, and some cleansers — bleach cotton on contact and leave permanent orange or white blotches. Kassatex calls this out specifically. If you use products containing either, keep a dedicated dark towel for your face and don't let it near these.

Should I wash them before first use?

Yes. New towels carry a finishing residue from manufacturing that repels water, which is why a brand-new towel often seems less absorbent than an old one. One wash removes it and opens the loops.

Why shouldn't I use fabric softener?

Softener coats cotton fibers with a waxy residue that fills the terry loops — the exact structure doing the absorbing. It makes towels feel plusher and work worse. On a towel you're relying on to strip water off after a plunge, that's the one thing you can't afford. Skip it. If your towels ever feel stiff or stop absorbing, run them through a wash with no detergent and no softener to strip buildup.

Will they shrink?

Cotton relaxes slightly across the first few wash cycles. Washing cold and drying low-to-medium keeps it minimal, and the dimensions listed are the finished sizes.

Does the Pima blend need different care?

No. The care instructions are the same as any fine cotton towel — cold wash, low-to-medium dry, no bleach, no softener. Pima is still cotton; it just has longer fibers.

How do I stop sauna towels smelling?

Dry them fully, every time. Sweat plus warm damp cotton left folded is exactly what odor-causing bacteria want, and once it sets into a towel it's stubborn. Hang them fully open with airflow after every session, and never leave a used towel inside the sauna cabin — the residual warmth makes it worse.

How often should I wash them with regular sauna use?

More often than bathroom towels. A bench towel absorbs sweat rather than clean shower water, so treat it more like gym kit — every two or three sessions, and immediately if it picks up any smell.

How many should I buy?

For one person saunaing a few times a week, six bath towels is a comfortable rotation — three in use, three clean. Add two hand towels and two washcloths. For a couple, double the bath towels. Towels need a full dry and wash cycle between uses.

Are they OEKO-TEX certified?

Yes — OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, certificate 21.HUS.51051 issued by Hohenstein. The finished textile has been tested against more than 1,000 harmful substances.

Why does certification matter on a sauna towel?

Because of when it touches you. Heat opens pores and raises skin permeability, and a bench towel is in contact with a large area of that skin for twenty minutes at a stretch. Verified substance testing is worth more here than on a towel used once after a shower.

Can I add a monogram?

Yes, for an additional $10 per item. Add it at checkout with the initials you want. Conventional terry takes embroidery cleanly — better than a waffle ground does.

How long does monogramming add to delivery?

Personalization adds 3–5 business days of processing on top of standard shipping, and that applies even to expedited orders.

Can I return a monogrammed towel?

Personalized items are made to order and are not returnable.

Do they coordinate with your Kassatex robes?

White and Platinum sit naturally alongside our Kassatex robe range. Call us and we'll confirm what pairs with the robe you're considering.

Do you supply spas, hotels, gyms, and bathhouses?

Regularly. Towels are the highest-turnover textile in any facility, and a Pima-blended long-staple cotton is specified where guests will notice the hand feel. We quote multi-unit orders and monogrammed sets carrying a property's mark. Call (302) 273-0861 or email customercare@thesaunarepublic.com with your quantity.

Are these HSA/FSA eligible?

No. HSA and FSA eligibility applies to qualifying wellness equipment such as saunas and cold plunges, not to textiles.

What's the return policy?

Non-personalized towels follow our standard return policy — unused and in original packaging. Monogrammed items are final sale. Please review our return policy for full details.

How long does shipping take?

Towels ship FedEx Ground. Allow 3–4 business days for processing plus 1–5 days in transit, and an additional 3–5 days if you've added a monogram. Free shipping on textile orders over $100.

Who do I call with questions?

We're available seven days a week at (302) 273-0861 or customercare@thesaunarepublic.com. Happy to talk through how many towels a setup needs, choosing between our towel collections, color matching, or monogramming.

How Freight Delivery Works

Large items (saunas, cold plunges, hot tubs) ship via LTL freight. Smaller items (heaters, accessories, wellness devices, Lumaflex, red light towers, robes and textiles) ship via UPS, FedEx, or USPS.

1. We ship your order. Tracking is emailed to you with the estimated delivery timeline.

2. The carrier calls you. The freight company calls to schedule your delivery appointment. You pick the date and time window.

3. Curbside delivery. Delivery is to the curb via semi-truck with liftgate (when available). You'll need a plan to move it from the curb to its final location.

4. Sign and inspect. You must be present to sign. Inspect for damage before signing — note any issues on the delivery receipt.

Unloading Your Sauna

The driver delivers to the curb only. You are responsible for moving the product to its final location. Have equipment and help arranged before delivery day.

Rent a forklift — Most common choice. Requires forklift extensions. ~$150–300/day.

Hire a tilt tow truck — Flatbed tow with tilt/slide functionality. ~$200–400.

Hire a rigging/moving crew — Professional movers with equipment. Get quotes in advance.

Tilt tow service (Dundalk only) — Available for $750. Contact us to add to your order.

Clearlight saunas ship in flat panels, not pre-assembled crates. Most can be carried inside by two people without heavy equipment. Dundalk saunas ship in crates exceeding 92" and 800–1,600 lbs — liftgate service is not available for these shipments.

Damage Claims

If your order arrives damaged, we'll get you a replacement as quickly as possible.

1. Inspect packaging for visible damage before signing.

2. Note damage on the delivery receipt — write "damaged" and have the driver sign.

3. Take photos of packaging and product damage.

4. Email photos to info@thesaunarepublic.com with your order number within 24 hours.

5. We file the claim and ship your replacement.

Damage must be reported within 24 hours of delivery with photos. Claims filed after 24 hours may not be eligible for a free replacement. Always note visible damage on the delivery receipt — even if it seems minor.

Carriers & Address Info

We reserve the right to select the carrier for all shipments.

Small items (heaters, accessories, wellness devices, red light towers) — UPS or FedEx

Robes & textiles — FedEx Ground. Street addresses only, no PO Boxes or APO/FPO.

Large items (saunas, cold plunges, hot tubs) — LTL freight carriers

Lumaflex devices — UPS, FedEx, or USPS

Once large items ship, we cannot change addresses or schedule specific delivery dates. If an item is returned due to an incorrect address, you're responsible for shipping costs both ways. If freight delivery fails because the carrier couldn't access your property, it's treated as a return per our return policy.

Remote Areas & Special Locations

Alaska, Hawaii & Puerto Rico — Contact Us Before Purchase

Free shipping does not apply to these locations (except Lumaflex — ships free nationwide). Contact us for a custom shipping quote before ordering. Orders placed without prior approval may be cancelled.

APO/FPO addresses: We ship most items to military addresses, subject to USPS restrictions. Additional fees may apply. Robes and textiles cannot be shipped to APO/FPO or PO Box addresses.

Remote/hard-to-reach areas: Additional fees may apply. We'll contact you before shipping if your location requires special arrangements.

Description

Kassatex Pergamon Turkish Towels: The Soft One

Two towels can weigh the same and feel nothing alike. Pergamon runs 650 GSM — identical to our Hammam towels — but blends 10% Pima cotton into a combed Aegean Turkish base and weaves it as conventional terry rather than waffle. The result is a towel that reads as airy and soft rather than textured and structural. It's the one you want waiting for you, not the one you sit on.

What the Pima Blend Actually Does

Pima is an extra-long-staple cotton. Longer fibers mean fewer exposed ends in the spun yarn, which is what your skin registers as smoothness — a short-staple towel feels slightly abrasive because there are more fiber ends per square inch touching you. At 10% it's a deliberate dose: enough to change the hand feel, not so much that you lose the absorbency and durability the Aegean cotton brings.

650 GSM That Doesn't Feel Heavy

Grams per square meter measures density, not stiffness. These are the same weight as our waffle-terry Hammam towels, yet Kassatex describes them as airy — and that's fair, because a conventional terry pile distributes that weight differently than a waffle grid does. You get the absorbency of a mid-weight towel with a lighter hand.

Where This Fits in a Sauna Routine

Towels are the one textile that belongs inside the heat. You sit on one — in Finnish practice that isn't optional, since bare skin on hot wood is uncomfortable, sweat soaks into the bench and shortens the timber's life, and in any shared sauna a bench towel is the baseline hygiene standard. But that's the towel taking the hardest use and needing the fastest turnaround, and for that job our waffle-weave Hammam towels are honestly better. Pergamon's place is the second towel: the dry one waiting outside for after the plunge or the shower, when softness is what you actually notice.

Two Inches That Matter

The bath towel runs 30" × 56", two inches longer than our Hammam. On a lower sauna bench that's the difference between a towel that stays under you and one that creeps as you move. Small spec, real effect.

After the Plunge

Water left on your skin after cold immersion keeps stealing heat long after you're out of the tub, which is why people shiver far longer than they expect. Getting it off fast is the highest-leverage move in the rewarming phase, and it's a pure absorbency problem. 650 GSM handles it in one pass — and against cold skin, a Pima-blended towel is considerably more pleasant than a coarse one.

One Thing That Ruins Towels

Benzoyl peroxide and hydrogen peroxide bleach cotton on contact and leave permanent orange or white blotches. Both are common in acne treatments, whitening products, and some cleansers. Kassatex calls this out specifically in their care instructions, and it's the most common way good towels get ruined. If you use products containing either, keep a dedicated dark towel for your face.

Six Colors, and a Practical Note

White, Avena, Freshwater Blue, Platinum, Persian Blue, and Powder Pink. For a sauna room specifically, mid-tone or darker is the practical choice — hard water and repeated use eventually cause mineral staining that Persian Blue and Platinum hide and White won't. Avena reads warmest against cedar or hemlock.

Certified Against 1,000+ Substances

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, certificate 21.HUS.51051 from Hohenstein — the finished textile tested against more than a thousand harmful substances. Worth noting that our Hammam towels carry the broader MADE IN GREEN label, which adds facility verification on top of the same substance testing. If third-party certification depth matters to you, that's the distinction.
