Frequently Asked Questions

What are these towels made of?

100% combed Aegean Turkish cotton, woven in Turkey, in an allover waffle-terry weave with a solid cuff at each end.

What does 650 GSM mean?

GSM is grams per square meter — the weight of the fabric. Kassatex classes 650 GSM as medium weight, and that's a substantial towel: enough density to absorb properly and enough structure to survive frequent washing, without the sponge-like bulk of a 900 GSM luxury bath sheet that takes a day to dry.

What is combed Aegean cotton?

Aegean cotton is grown in western Turkey and known for long fibers. Combing is a mechanical step that removes the short fibers before spinning, leaving only the long ones. The result is a stronger yarn that sheds less lint and pills less over time — which matters more on a towel washed twice a week than on almost anything else in your house.

What is waffle-terry weave?

A hybrid. Terry gives you the absorbent loops; the waffle grid gives you a three-dimensional structure that holds air and speeds drying. Kassatex describes the resulting feel as neither too soft nor overly plush, and that's fair — it has real texture rather than the flat pillow-softness of a conventional bath towel.

Why does that weave suit sauna use?

Because a sauna towel gets used wet, repeatedly, in a warm room, and then has to dry before the next session. A dense plush towel absorbs beautifully once and then stays damp for hours. Waffle-terry sheds moisture to the air far faster while still absorbing like cotton, which is the right trade-off when the same towel is doing three jobs across a two-hour session.

Do I take a towel into the sauna?

Yes — and unlike a robe, a towel belongs inside the room. You sit on it. In Finnish practice that's not optional: bare skin on hot wood is uncomfortable, sweat soaks into the bench and shortens the life of the timber, and in any shared sauna a bench towel is the basic hygiene standard.

Which size should I use as a bench towel?

The bath towel at 30" x 54". That's enough to sit on with room to spare, or to lie on across a lower bench. A hand towel is too small to protect the wood properly once you start moving.

So how many towels do I actually need per session?

Three, doing different jobs. A bath towel to sit on inside the room. A second bath towel kept dry outside for after your plunge or shower. And a hand towel for wiping sweat off your face and neck between rounds. Trying to make one towel do all three is how you end up sitting on something soaked.

What's the washcloth for in a sauna setup?

Face and neck. Wet it with cold water and hold it against your face during a hot round — it's the oldest trick in sauna practice for extending your time comfortably, and it's more pleasant than a hand towel for the job. Also useful as a cold compress on the back of the neck during the cool-down.

Are these good after a cold plunge?

Yes. After cold immersion the priority is getting water off your skin fast, because evaporation keeps stealing heat long after you're out of the tub. 650 GSM cotton has enough loft to strip a plunge off you in one pass. Keep this towel dry and outside the water — a damp towel does half the job.

Can I use them in a steam room?

Yes, with the same bench-towel logic. Waffle-terry handles saturated air better than a dense plush towel, which soaks through fast in steam and becomes heavy. It'll still get wet — that's unavoidable in a steam room — but it recovers faster once it's back in ambient air.

What sizes are available?

Bath Towel at 30" x 54", Hand Towel at 18" x 28", and Washcloth at 13" x 13".

Is there a bath sheet?

Not in this collection as we carry it — Bath Towel, Hand Towel, and Washcloth are the three sizes offered. If you want something larger for wrapping, call us at (302) 273-0861 and we'll point you at an alternative.

What colors are available?

Seven: White, Dolphin Grey, Charcoal, Misty Sage, Latte, Cielo, and Stonewash Blue.

Which color makes sense for a sauna room?

Practically, a mid-tone. White shows every mark and will need bleaching you shouldn't do — see below. The darker options, Charcoal and Stonewash Blue, hide the mineral staining that hard water and repeated use eventually cause. Misty Sage and Latte sit in between and read warmest against cedar or hemlock.

Does the bath towel have a hanger loop?

Yes, sewn in. That matters more for sauna use than in a bathroom — a towel that hangs fully open dries between rounds, and a sewn-in loop means you can hang it on any hook by the cabin door.

How do I wash them?

Machine wash cold. Dry on low to medium heat. Do not bleach.

Why no bleach on white towels?

Because bleach breaks down cotton fibers, and on a towel washed twice a week that shortens its life considerably. It also yellows white cotton over time rather than whitening it. For whites, wash separately with a normal detergent — the towel will stay whiter longer than it would with bleach.

What about acne washes and skincare products?

This is the one that catches people out. Benzoyl peroxide and hydrogen peroxide — both common in acne treatments, whitening products, and some cleansers — bleach cotton on contact and leave permanent orange or white blotches. Kassatex calls this out specifically. If you use products containing either, keep a dedicated dark towel for your face and don't let it near the good ones.

Should I wash them before first use?

Yes. New towels carry a finishing residue from manufacturing that repels water, which is why a brand-new towel often seems less absorbent than an old one. One wash removes it and opens the loops.

Why shouldn't I use fabric softener?

Softener coats cotton fibers with a waxy residue that fills the terry loops — the exact structure doing the absorbing. It makes towels feel plusher and work worse. On a towel you're relying on to strip water off you after a plunge, that's the one thing you can't afford. Skip it entirely. If your towels ever feel stiff or stop absorbing, run them through a wash with no detergent and no softener to strip buildup.

Will they shrink?

Cotton relaxes slightly across the first few wash cycles. Washing cold and drying low-to-medium keeps it minimal, and the dimensions listed are the finished sizes.

How do I stop sauna towels smelling?

Dry them fully, every time. Sweat plus warm damp cotton left folded or crumpled is exactly what odor-causing bacteria want, and once it sets into a towel it's stubborn. Hang them fully open with airflow after every session and never leave a used towel inside the sauna cabin — the residual warmth makes it worse, not better.

How often should I wash them with regular sauna use?

More often than bathroom towels. A bench towel absorbs sweat rather than clean shower water, so treat it more like gym kit — every two or three sessions, and immediately if it picks up any smell.

How many should I buy?

For one person saunaing a few times a week, six bath towels is a comfortable rotation — three in use, three clean. Add two hand towels and two washcloths. For a couple, double the bath towels. Towels need a full dry and wash cycle between uses, and running short is how people end up reusing a damp bench towel.

Are they OEKO-TEX certified?

Yes — OEKO-TEX MADE IN GREEN, certificate M1SM3RY29. That means the finished textile is tested against more than 1,000 harmful substances, and the production facilities are verified for environmental performance and working conditions.

Why does certification matter on a sauna towel?

Because of when it touches you. Heat opens pores and raises skin permeability, and a bench towel is in contact with a large area of that skin for twenty minutes at a stretch. Verified substance testing is worth more here than on a towel used once after a shower.

What's the difference between MADE IN GREEN and STANDARD 100?

STANDARD 100 tests the finished textile for harmful substances. MADE IN GREEN includes that same testing and adds facility verification — environmental performance and working conditions along the supply chain. MADE IN GREEN is the broader of the two labels.

Can I add a monogram?

Yes, for an additional $10 per item. Add it at checkout with the initials you want.

Is a monogram practical on a sauna towel?

In a household where several people use the sauna and towels hang side by side on the same hooks, it solves a real problem. For commercial properties it does the same job at scale, and we can quote monogrammed sets carrying your mark.

How long does monogramming add to delivery?

Personalization adds 3–5 business days of processing on top of standard shipping, and that applies even to expedited orders.

Can I return a monogrammed towel?

Personalized items are made to order and are not returnable.

Do they coordinate with your Kassatex robes?

The White and grey colorways sit naturally alongside our Kassatex robe range, so you can build a matched sauna textile set. Call us and we'll confirm what pairs with the robe you're considering.

Do you supply spas, hotels, gyms, and bathhouses?

Regularly. Towels are the highest-turnover textile in any facility, and combed long-staple cotton at 650 GSM is specified precisely because it survives industrial laundering. We quote multi-unit orders and monogrammed sets carrying a property's mark. Call (302) 273-0861 or email customercare@thesaunarepublic.com with your quantity.

Are these HSA/FSA eligible?

No. HSA and FSA eligibility applies to qualifying wellness equipment such as saunas and cold plunges, not to textiles.

What's the return policy?

Non-personalized towels follow our standard return policy — unused and in original packaging. Monogrammed items are final sale. Please review our return policy for full details.

How long does shipping take?

Towels ship FedEx Ground. Allow 3–4 business days for processing plus 1–5 days in transit, and an additional 3–5 days if you've added a monogram. Free shipping on textile orders over $100.

Who do I call with questions?

We're available seven days a week at (302) 273-0861 or customercare@thesaunarepublic.com. Happy to talk through how many towels a setup needs, color choice, monogramming, or building a full textile set for a sauna room or plunge area.

How Freight Delivery Works

Large items (saunas, cold plunges, hot tubs) ship via LTL freight. Smaller items (heaters, accessories, wellness devices, Lumaflex, red light towers, robes and textiles) ship via UPS, FedEx, or USPS.

1. We ship your order. Tracking is emailed to you with the estimated delivery timeline.

2. The carrier calls you. The freight company calls to schedule your delivery appointment. You pick the date and time window.

3. Curbside delivery. Delivery is to the curb via semi-truck with liftgate (when available). You'll need a plan to move it from the curb to its final location.

4. Sign and inspect. You must be present to sign. Inspect for damage before signing — note any issues on the delivery receipt.

Unloading Your Sauna

The driver delivers to the curb only. You are responsible for moving the product to its final location. Have equipment and help arranged before delivery day.

Rent a forklift — Most common choice. Requires forklift extensions. ~$150–300/day.

Hire a tilt tow truck — Flatbed tow with tilt/slide functionality. ~$200–400.

Hire a rigging/moving crew — Professional movers with equipment. Get quotes in advance.

Tilt tow service (Dundalk only) — Available for $750. Contact us to add to your order.

Clearlight saunas ship in flat panels, not pre-assembled crates. Most can be carried inside by two people without heavy equipment. Dundalk saunas ship in crates exceeding 92" and 800–1,600 lbs — liftgate service is not available for these shipments.

Damage Claims

If your order arrives damaged, we'll get you a replacement as quickly as possible.

1. Inspect packaging for visible damage before signing.

2. Note damage on the delivery receipt — write "damaged" and have the driver sign.

3. Take photos of packaging and product damage.

4. Email photos to info@thesaunarepublic.com with your order number within 24 hours.

5. We file the claim and ship your replacement.

Damage must be reported within 24 hours of delivery with photos. Claims filed after 24 hours may not be eligible for a free replacement. Always note visible damage on the delivery receipt — even if it seems minor.

Carriers & Address Info

We reserve the right to select the carrier for all shipments.

Small items (heaters, accessories, wellness devices, red light towers) — UPS or FedEx

Robes & textiles — FedEx Ground. Street addresses only, no PO Boxes or APO/FPO.

Large items (saunas, cold plunges, hot tubs) — LTL freight carriers

Lumaflex devices — UPS, FedEx, or USPS

Once large items ship, we cannot change addresses or schedule specific delivery dates. If an item is returned due to an incorrect address, you're responsible for shipping costs both ways. If freight delivery fails because the carrier couldn't access your property, it's treated as a return per our return policy.

Remote Areas & Special Locations

Alaska, Hawaii & Puerto Rico — Contact Us Before Purchase

Free shipping does not apply to these locations (except Lumaflex — ships free nationwide). Contact us for a custom shipping quote before ordering. Orders placed without prior approval may be cancelled.

APO/FPO addresses: We ship most items to military addresses, subject to USPS restrictions. Additional fees may apply. Robes and textiles cannot be shipped to APO/FPO or PO Box addresses.

Remote/hard-to-reach areas: Additional fees may apply. We'll contact you before shipping if your location requires special arrangements.

Description

Kassatex Hammam Turkish Towels: The One Textile That Goes Inside

Every robe we sell comes with the same instruction — never wear it inside the heat. Towels are the exception. A bench towel belongs in the room with you, and in Finnish sauna practice it isn't optional: bare skin on hot wood is unpleasant, sweat soaks into the timber and shortens its life, and in any shared sauna it's the baseline hygiene standard. These are 100% combed Aegean Turkish cotton at 650 GSM, woven in Turkey in an allover waffle-terry with a solid cuff at each end.

650 GSM, and What That Number Actually Buys

Grams per square meter is the honest measure of a towel. Below about 400 you get something thin that dries fast and absorbs little. Above 800 you get a luxurious bath sheet that holds water like a sponge and takes a day to dry. 650 sits in the useful middle — enough density to strip water off you in one pass, enough structure to survive being washed twice a week for years. Kassatex calls it medium weight, and against a hotel bath sheet that's fair.

Combed Aegean Cotton Is a Durability Spec

Aegean cotton grows in western Turkey and produces long fibers. Combing removes the short ones mechanically before spinning, so only the long fibers make it into the yarn. That gives you a towel that sheds less lint, pills less, and holds its structure through hundreds of wash cycles. On a bench towel washed after every second session, that's the difference between three years and one.

Waffle-Terry Solves the Drying Problem

Terry loops do the absorbing. The waffle grid woven through them creates a three-dimensional structure that holds air and moves moisture out to the room. A dense plush towel absorbs brilliantly once and then stays damp for hours — fine in a bathroom, a problem in a sauna room where the same towel is working across a two-hour session. This one recovers between rounds instead of just accumulating.

The Three-Towel System

Most people under-buy and end up sitting on something soaked. A proper session uses three towels doing different jobs. A bath towel to sit on inside the room. A second bath towel kept dry outside for after the plunge or the shower. And a hand towel for wiping sweat off your face and neck between rounds. The washcloth earns its place too — wet it with cold water and hold it to your face during a hot round, which is the oldest trick in sauna practice for extending your time comfortably.

After the Plunge

Water left on your skin after cold immersion keeps stealing heat long after you're out of the tub, which is why people shiver far longer than they expect. Getting it off fast is the single highest-leverage move in the rewarming phase, and it's a pure absorbency problem. 650 GSM cotton handles it in one pass — provided the towel is dry and waiting, not the one you've been sitting on.

One Thing That Ruins Towels, and Nobody Warns You

Benzoyl peroxide and hydrogen peroxide bleach cotton on contact and leave permanent orange or white blotches. Both are common in acne treatments, whitening products, and some cleansers. Kassatex calls this out specifically in their care instructions, and it's the single most common way good towels get ruined. If you use products containing either, keep a dedicated dark towel for your face and keep it away from these.

Seven Colors, and a Practical Note on Choosing

White, Dolphin Grey, Charcoal, Misty Sage, Latte, Cielo, and Stonewash Blue. For a sauna room specifically, a mid-tone or darker is the practical choice — hard water and repeated use eventually cause mineral staining that white shows and Charcoal or Stonewash Blue hide. Misty Sage and Latte sit in between and read warmest against cedar or hemlock.

Certified for Skin That's Wide Open

OEKO-TEX MADE IN GREEN, certificate M1SM3RY29 — the broader of the two OEKO-TEX labels, covering testing against 1,000+ harmful substances plus verification of the production facilities. Heat raises skin permeability, and a bench towel is in contact with a large area of that skin for twenty minutes at a stretch.
