Product Overview

Type: Sauna Stones

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Harvia AC3000 sauna stones?

Split-face olivine diabase stones, 5–10 cm, sold in 44 lb boxes. These are the standard-format sauna stones — roughly 2 to 4 inches across — and the most widely specified size across the Harvia range.

What's in a box?

44 lbs of stones, each roughly 2" to 4" across.

How are these different from the AC3020?

Size, and that's the whole difference. The AC3020 is the same stone type at 10–15 cm; these are 5–10 cm. Both are split-face olivine diabase. Which one you need depends entirely on your heater — they aren't interchangeable.

Which heaters use these stones?

Most of the Harvia range. The KIP series, the Club series and the Cilindro series all specify AC3000. The Virta series and the M3 wood stove take the larger AC3020 instead. Always check your heater's manual before ordering.

How many boxes do I need?

Depends entirely on your heater's stone capacity, and the range is wide. A KIP heater takes one box. The Club series takes three. The Cilindro PC110E takes six. Check your heater's specification, or tell us the model and we'll tell you exactly how many.

Can I use these instead of the larger AC3020?

No, unless your heater specifies them. Stone size isn't cosmetic — it determines airflow through the heater. Stones too small for a large heater pack too densely and choke the airflow; stones too large for a compact heater leave gaps that reduce heat transfer. Follow the manual.

What happens if I use the wrong size?

At best, a heater that doesn't perform as it should. At worst, restricted airflow that runs the elements hotter than designed and shortens their life. It's a cheap mistake to avoid — just check the manual or ask us.

What is olivine diabase?

A dense volcanic rock that handles repeated heating and rapid cooling without splitting — which is exactly what a sauna does to stone every session. It's the standard material for quality sauna stones for that reason.

What does "split face" mean?

The stones are broken rather than tumbled, leaving angular faces and sharp edges. That shape creates more surface area and gives a crisper, more immediate burst of steam when water hits them, compared to the softer steam from rounded stones.

Should I use split-face or rounded stones?

Follow your heater's manual first — most Harvia heaters specify split-face. Rounded stones like the R-991 are designed for the Spirit series specifically. If your heater calls for split-face, use split-face.

Why can't I just use rocks from my garden?

Because they can explode. Ordinary stone often holds trapped moisture or has a layered structure that fails when you pour water on it at 190°F. River rock and granite are particularly risky. Sauna stones are selected and tested for this specific abuse.

Are they safe?

Yes — they're selected, cleaned and intended for sauna use, and they carry no Prop 65 warning.

Do I need to wash them first?

Yes. Rinse them before loading to clear off dust from handling and transport. Otherwise the first few heats will smell of hot dust.

How do I load them into the heater?

Loosely. This is the single most important thing — stack them so air can move freely between the stones, never wedged tight or forced in around the elements. Good circulation is what keeps the elements cool enough to last.

What happens if I pack them too tightly?

You choke the airflow. The elements run hotter than designed, the heater works harder to reach temperature, and element life drops significantly. It's the most common cause of premature heater failure and it's entirely avoidable.

Should I fill the heater completely?

Fill to the capacity in your heater's manual — no more, no less. Underfilling exposes elements and wastes steam potential; overfilling restricts airflow and can obstruct the heater's own safety sensors.

Do bigger stones go on the bottom or top?

Larger stones at the bottom, smaller toward the top, is the general rule — it keeps the base stable and the airflow open. Your heater's manual is the authority if it specifies otherwise.

Can I reuse the stones from my old heater?

If they're intact, not crumbling, and the right size for your new heater, yes — sauna stones aren't brand-specific. If they've broken down, which is common on a heater that has failed, replace them. Worth a look before you buy new ones.

How often should I check them?

Once a year for a home sauna. More often for heavy or commercial use.

How do I know when to replace them?

Look for cracking, crumbling, or stones that have visibly shrunk and settled. If the pile has compacted and airflow looks restricted, or you're finding grit at the bottom of the heater, it's time. Stones are consumable — they don't last forever.

How long do they last?

Typically a year or two with regular home use, longer if you sauna occasionally, shorter in a commercial setting. Each heating cycle stresses them a little more.

What happens if I don't replace them?

Degraded stones restrict airflow, the heater runs hotter, and the elements fail early. Replacing a $60 box of stones is considerably cheaper than replacing a heater — this is genuinely the highest-return maintenance you can do.

Should I restack them even if they're fine?

Yes, once a year. Stones settle and compact over time even without breaking down. Taking them out, checking them and restacking loosely restores the airflow.

Can I wash them when I restack?

Yes, a rinse in plain water is fine and clears accumulated dust. Let them dry before reloading. Skip soaps and cleaning products entirely.

Can I pour water on them?

Yes — that's what they're for. Ladle plain water over the stones for löyly, one ladleful at a time. Never pour water directly onto the heating elements themselves.

Can I use essential oils on the stones?

Only sauna-specific products, diluted in the water bucket rather than poured neat onto the stones. Undiluted oils scorch, stain, leave residue that's difficult to remove, and in some cases can ignite.

Can I use salt water or beer on the stones?

No. Salt corrodes the heater, and sugary liquids like beer burn on and leave residue that smells for months. Plain water only — or a proper sauna fragrance in the bucket.

Will they smell when new?

The first heat or two may have a faint mineral smell as any residual dust burns off. Rinsing them before loading minimises it, and it clears quickly.

Are they all the same size and shape?

No, and that's expected — these are natural stone, so every piece is unique in shape and size. Harvia suggest buying an extra box so you can select the best-fitting pieces for your heater and keep the rest as spares. Worth considering given the freight on stone.

Should I order an extra box?

It's not required, but it gives you choice on fit and a supply for topping up as stones settle. The trade-off is freight — stone is heavy, and shipping a spare box costs more than the box.

How do they ship?

By parcel carrier, in 44 lb boxes. Freight is calculated to your address, and because stone is dense, shipping is a real cost rather than a rounding error. Ask us for a delivered price.

Is it cheaper to buy stones locally?

Sometimes, and we'd rather tell you than quietly sell you the freight. If a local sauna supplier stocks proper 5–10 cm split-face stone, buying locally can work out better on a large load — a Cilindro PC110E needs six boxes, which is 264 lbs of rock. Just make sure it's genuine sauna stone in the right size.

Can I order these with a heater?

Yes, and it's usually the sensible way to do it — one quote, one delivery conversation, and we make sure the quantity actually matches your heater's capacity rather than leaving you to work it out.

What if I order the wrong quantity?

Tell us your heater model before you order and it won't happen. Stone capacity varies enormously — one box for a KIP, three for a Club, six for the largest Cilindro.

Do they come with a warranty?

No. Sauna stones are a consumable, like brake pads or filters — they're expected to degrade with use and get replaced periodically. That's normal and not a defect.

Are they suitable for a wood-burning stove?

Check your stove's manual. Wood stoves generally take the larger 10–15 cm AC3020 stones — the Harvia M3 does. If yours specifies 5–10 cm, these are correct.

Can I use them in an infrared sauna?

No. Infrared saunas have no stones and no steam — they heat you directly rather than heating the air and a stone mass. If you have an infrared cabin, you don't need stones at all.

How do I dispose of old stones?

They're just rock — ordinary landscaping material once they've broken down. Drainage, path fill, or general disposal. Nothing hazardous about them.

Why doesn't the price show on this page?

Freight on stone varies significantly by address and quantity, and most buyers need these quoted alongside a heater. Request pricing and you'll get one delivered figure rather than a number you have to add shipping to.

Why buy from Sauna Republic?

We're an authorized Harvia dealer. Tell us your heater model and we'll confirm the right stone size and quantity before you spend anything — which matters more than it sounds, because the wrong size or a short order means a second freight charge on something heavy.

What's your return policy?

Please review our return policy at thesaunarepublic.com/policies/refund-policy. Given the weight and freight cost on stone, it's worth confirming size and quantity with us before ordering rather than after.

How Freight Delivery Works

Large items (saunas, cold plunges, hot tubs) ship via LTL freight. Smaller items (heaters, accessories, wellness devices, Lumaflex, red light towers) ship via UPS, FedEx, or USPS.

1. We ship your order. Tracking is emailed to you with the estimated delivery timeline.

2. The carrier calls you. The freight company calls to schedule your delivery appointment. You pick the date and time window.

3. Curbside delivery. Delivery is to the curb via semi-truck with liftgate (when available). You'll need a plan to move it from the curb to its final location.

4. Sign and inspect. You must be present to sign. Inspect for damage before signing — note any issues on the delivery receipt.

Unloading Your Sauna

The driver delivers to the curb only. You are responsible for moving the product to its final location. Have equipment and help arranged before delivery day.

Rent a forklift — Most common choice. Requires forklift extensions. ~$150–300/day.

Hire a tilt tow truck — Flatbed tow with tilt/slide functionality. ~$200–400.

Hire a rigging/moving crew — Professional movers with equipment. Get quotes in advance.

Tilt tow service (Dundalk only) — Available for $750. Contact us to add to your order.

Clearlight saunas ship in flat panels, not pre-assembled crates. Most can be carried inside by two people without heavy equipment. Dundalk saunas ship in crates exceeding 92" and 800–1,600 lbs — liftgate service is not available for these shipments.

Damage Claims

If your order arrives damaged, we'll get you a replacement as quickly as possible.

1. Inspect packaging for visible damage before signing.

2. Note damage on the delivery receipt — write "damaged" and have the driver sign.

3. Take photos of packaging and product damage.

4. Email photos to info@thesaunarepublic.com with your order number within 24 hours.

5. We file the claim and ship your replacement.

Damage must be reported within 24 hours of delivery with photos. Claims filed after 24 hours may not be eligible for a free replacement. Always note visible damage on the delivery receipt — even if it seems minor.

Carriers & Address Info

We reserve the right to select the carrier for all shipments.

Small items (heaters, accessories, wellness devices, red light towers) — UPS or FedEx

Large items (saunas, cold plunges, hot tubs) — LTL freight carriers

Lumaflex devices — UPS, FedEx, or USPS

Once large items ship, we cannot change addresses or schedule specific delivery dates. If an item is returned due to an incorrect address, you're responsible for shipping costs both ways. If freight delivery fails because the carrier couldn't access your property, it's treated as a return per our return policy.

Remote Areas & Special Locations

  • Material: Olivine Diabase
  • Color/Finish: Natural Stone

Description

Split face sauna stones are recommended for electric sauna heaters and wood-burning stoves for the best performance. Split face stones store more heat, so that the water thrown onto them will evaporate efficiently on the broad stone surface. Harvia split face sauna stones stack easily and allow better air circulation, which improves the durability of heating elements. Harvia sauna stones are selected to provide bathers with an intense, soft heat.

The AC3000 5-10cm stones are compatible with Harvia Vega, KIP, Cilindro, TopClass, Club, The Wall, and Spirit series electric heaters. Stone requirements vary by heater model: Cilindro PC60, PC80, PC90, and their E-series variants require 200 lbs of stones (5 boxes), while the larger Cilindro PC110E requires 264 lbs (6 boxes). Club series heaters (K10G, K12.5G, K15G) require 132 lbs (3 boxes). Vega Compact heaters require 29 lbs (1 box).

Each natural stone is unique in shape and size. We recommend purchasing an additional box of sauna stones to allow you to choose the highest quality of stone for fit, form, and function.
