Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Harvia KIP45B?

It's a 4.5 kW wall-mounted electric sauna heater in polished stainless steel with the controls built into the unit itself — no separate wall panel needed. It's the smallest and simplest heater in Harvia's KIP line, and the most economical way into a proper traditional sauna.

What size sauna does it heat?

Rooms from 100 to 210 cubic feet. That's the manufacturer's rating and it's worth staying inside it — an undersized heater runs flat out and wears early, an oversized one short-cycles and never settles.

How do I work out my room volume?

Length × width × height in feet. A 5' × 5' room with a 7' ceiling is 175 cubic feet, comfortably inside this heater's range. If you're near either end of the band, send us your dimensions and we'll check it properly.

Is this big enough for my sauna?

If your room is over 210 cubic feet, no — step up to the KIP60B at 6 kW. Undersizing is the more common mistake and it's the more expensive one, because the heater never quite gets there and works itself to death trying.

Is 4.5 kW enough for a proper sauna experience?

In a room it's correctly sized for, absolutely. Output determines how large a space a heater can bring up to temperature, not how good the sauna is. A properly matched 4.5 kW in a small room outperforms an oversized heater every time.

Does glass in my sauna change the sizing?

Yes, and on a small heater it matters more. Glass sheds heat faster than insulated timber, so a glass-fronted room behaves like a larger one. With only 4.5 kW to work with there's little margin — tell us your glass area before you order.

What's the difference between the KIP45B and the KIP45W?

Controls, and nothing else. The B has its controls built into the heater — you set it at the unit. The W has no onboard controls and requires a separate Xenio wall panel, sold separately. Same 4.5 kW output, same room range, same body.

Which should I choose, B or W?

The B if you want the simplest, most economical install and don't mind reaching the heater to set it. The W if you'd rather operate from a wall panel outside the hot zone, or want digital scheduling. The W is cheaper as a unit but needs the controller on top, which usually makes the B the lower all-in price by a wide margin.

Can I add Wi-Fi or app control to this heater?

No. The built-in controls are self-contained, and this model isn't compatible with an external digital controller. If remote or scheduled starting matters to you, look at the KIP45W with a Xenio panel, or ask us about the Spirit and Cilindro series which are built around that capability.

Where are the controls on the unit?

At the bottom of the heater, where they can be reached without leaning over the stones.

What electrical service does it need?

240V single phase, drawing 18.8 amps on a 30-amp line fuse. It's hardwired — no plug.

Is this the easiest Harvia to wire?

It's the lightest electrical load in the KIP range, which usually makes it the least disruptive to add to an existing panel. That's a genuine advantage if your service is already close to capacity — it can be the difference between a straightforward install and a panel upgrade.

Can I run it on my existing sauna circuit?

Very possibly, if you're replacing a similar-sized heater. Send us a photo of your breaker and the old heater's rating plate and we'll confirm before you spend anything.

Do I need a GFCI breaker?

No, and this matters. Harvia heaters should not be run on GFCI — it causes nuisance tripping and voids the warranty. If your electrician suggests one, point them at the installation manual before anything gets wired.

Can my electrician install it?

Yes, any licensed electrician can. Give them the manual before they start — the circuit requirements and the no-GFCI note are both in it, and it saves a return visit.

What are the dimensions?

16" wide × 11" deep × 24" high (410 × 280 × 600 mm) — the same body as the larger KIP heaters, so a smaller output doesn't mean a smaller footprint on the wall.

How much does it weigh?

30 lbs empty. With 44 lbs of stones loaded it's around 74 lbs on the wall, so it needs to be mounted into solid framing rather than just cladding.

Why stainless steel?

Corrosion resistance. A sauna is a hot, humid room and steel that isn't protected will eventually show it. The polished stainless casing is durable and holds its appearance, which is why it's the traditional finish for sauna heaters.

How much clearance does it need?

Minimum clearances to walls, benches and ceiling are in the installation manual and they're a fire-safety requirement, not a suggestion. In a compact sauna this is the constraint that most often forces a bench rethink, so check it before you build.

Where should it go in the room?

Conventionally on the wall by the door, so heat rises across the benches rather than straight up the wall behind you. Layout genuinely affects how the room feels, so if you're building from scratch, ask us before you frame it.

Are stones included?

No. The KIP45B needs one box of Harvia AC3000 split-face stones, 5–10 cm, ordered separately. The heater will not run safely without them.

How many boxes do I need?

One box covers the 44 lb stone capacity — the same as the larger KIP heaters, since they share a body. Harvia suggest buying a second so you can hand-pick the best-fitting pieces, though that's optional and adds freight on something heavy.

Can I reuse the stones from my old heater?

If they're intact and not crumbling, yes — sauna stones aren't brand-specific, only size-specific, and the KIP takes 5–10 cm split-face. If they've broken down, which is common on a heater that has failed, replace them. Worth a look before you buy new ones.

Can I use rounded stones instead?

The KIP is specified for split-face AC3000. The rounded R-991 stones are designed for the Spirit series and its much larger stone column. Stick to what the manual specifies.

Can I use any stones?

Only proper sauna stones. Never river rock, granite, or decorative landscape stone — ordinary rock can crack or explode when water hits it at temperature.

How do I load the stones?

Rinse them first, then stack loosely so air moves freely between them — never wedge them tight or force them around the elements. The manual shows the correct arrangement. Packing too densely restricts airflow and shortens element life.

How often do stones need replacing?

Inspect them once a year. They break down with repeated heating and cooling, and crumbling stones choke airflow through the heater. Restack as they settle, replace when they start falling apart. It's the cheapest thing you can do to extend the life of the heater.

How long does it take to heat up?

Typically 30 to 45 minutes for a well-insulated room in its size range, though a cold room in winter takes longer.

How hot does it get?

Maximum setting is 194°F (90°C), a traditional Finnish sauna temperature. Most people run between 160 and 185°F.

Does it have a timer?

The built-in controls include timer functionality. Details and settings are covered in the operation manual supplied with the heater.

Can I pour water on it?

Yes — that's the point of a traditional heater. Ladle water over the stones for löyly. Plain water, a ladleful at a time, never poured directly onto the elements.

Can I add essential oils?

Only products made for sauna use, diluted in the water bucket rather than poured neat on the stones. Undiluted oils can scorch, stain the stones, and in some cases ignite.

What does "direct rock-to-element contact" mean?

The stones sit directly against the heating elements rather than being separated by a shield. Heat transfers into the stone mass more efficiently, which is what gives a traditional heater its steam response when you ladle water.

Can the elements be replaced?

Yes. Harvia builds the KIP with industrial-grade serviceable elements, and parts are stocked across the US. That's a real advantage over heaters that have to be replaced whole when one element fails.

What is it made of?

Polished stainless steel casing with industrial-grade serviceable elements rather than sealed ones.

What's included?

The heater, the installation and operation manual, and a 2-year consumer-use warranty. Stones and any wiring materials are separate — but no controller is needed, which is the point of the B version.

What's the warranty?

Two years for consumer use, covering defects in materials and workmanship. Heating elements and stones are normally excluded as wear items — ask us for the current written terms before you order.

Can I use it in a commercial sauna?

The warranty above is for consumer use. If this is going into a gym, spa, hotel or club, tell us — commercial installations have different warranty terms and often different heater recommendations, and we handle those projects regularly.

Is it certified for North America?

Yes — UL listed. Your electrical inspector will want to see that listing.

Where is it made?

Designed, engineered and manufactured in Finland.

How does it compare to the KIP60B?

Same heater, one step up in output. The 6 kW covers 170 to 300 cubic feet against this one's 100 to 210, and draws 25 amps against 18.8. There's overlap between 170 and 210 cubic feet — in that band either works, and the 4.5 kW is the cheaper unit on a smaller circuit. Send us your dimensions and we'll make the call with you.

Should I go bigger just in case?

No. Too much output means the heater reaches temperature and shuts off before the stones are properly charged, which gives you a hot room with weak steam — the opposite of what you want. It also means a bigger circuit and a bigger electrical bill for no benefit.

Will it replace my existing heater?

Usually, if you're matching output. Going like-for-like off a working 4.5 kW is generally straightforward, but confirm your existing circuit is 240V on a 30-amp breaker first. Send us a photo of your old heater's rating plate and we'll tell you.

How does it ship?

By parcel carrier. Freight is calculated to your address — ask us for a delivered price and you'll get one number.

How long does delivery take?

Get in touch for current availability and a realistic date. We'd rather give you a real timeframe than a stock phrase.

How do I maintain it?

Very little. Wipe the casing occasionally, check and restack the stones annually, keep debris from building up around the unit, and let the room air out after each session.

What if something goes wrong?

Call us. We handle warranty claims directly with Harvia rather than handing you a phone number, and Harvia's US parts network is deep — most issues are a part rather than a replacement.

Why doesn't the price show on this page?

Because most buyers need the stones quoted alongside, and freight varies by address. Request pricing and you'll get one delivered figure for a complete working setup rather than a number you have to add to.

Why buy from Sauna Republic?

We're an authorized Harvia dealer, so you get the full manufacturer warranty and one point of contact from sizing through installation questions. We'll spec the heater against your actual room rather than a chart, and give you the electrical requirements before your electrician quotes.

What's your return policy?

Please review our return policy at thesaunarepublic.com/policies/refund-policy. Because heaters are sized to a specific room and hardwired on installation, talk to us before ordering if you have any questions — we'd much rather get the sizing right up front.

How Freight Delivery Works

Large items (saunas, cold plunges, hot tubs) ship via LTL freight. Smaller items (heaters, accessories, wellness devices, Lumaflex, red light towers) ship via UPS, FedEx, or USPS.

1. We ship your order. Tracking is emailed to you with the estimated delivery timeline.

2. The carrier calls you. The freight company calls to schedule your delivery appointment. You pick the date and time window.

3. Curbside delivery. Delivery is to the curb via semi-truck with liftgate (when available). You'll need a plan to move it from the curb to its final location.

4. Sign and inspect. You must be present to sign. Inspect for damage before signing — note any issues on the delivery receipt.

Unloading Your Sauna

The driver delivers to the curb only. You are responsible for moving the product to its final location. Have equipment and help arranged before delivery day.

Rent a forklift — Most common choice. Requires forklift extensions. ~$150–300/day.

Hire a tilt tow truck — Flatbed tow with tilt/slide functionality. ~$200–400.

Hire a rigging/moving crew — Professional movers with equipment. Get quotes in advance.

Tilt tow service (Dundalk only) — Available for $750. Contact us to add to your order.

Clearlight saunas ship in flat panels, not pre-assembled crates. Most can be carried inside by two people without heavy equipment. Dundalk saunas ship in crates exceeding 92" and 800–1,600 lbs — liftgate service is not available for these shipments.

Description

The Harvia KIP series has earned the designation of "most popular sauna heater on the planet" for good reason. With over 40 years of production history dating to the 1980s, it offers proven Finnish engineering at an accessible price point.

The KIP45B features convenient built-in controls at the bottom of the heater, making installation simple—no separate controller required. The operating switches can be positioned on the front or right side for added flexibility in your sauna layout.

The attractive polished stainless steel outer casing boasts superior durability and resists corrosion, ensuring your heater looks great for years. Triple-wall construction keeps the exterior cool to the touch for added safety.

The large 50 lb stone capacity ensures optimal heat dispersion and the ability to produce satisfying steam when you pour water on the rocks. Industrial-grade heating elements with direct stone contact heat up fast—typically reaching sauna temperature in 20-30 minutes.

Compatible Stones:

  • Harvia AC3000 (5-10cm) — 1 box required (50 lbs)

Note: We recommend purchasing an additional box of sauna stones to allow you to choose the highest quality stones for fit, form, and function.
