Best Barrel Saunas for Your Backyard
Barrel saunas are among the most popular outdoor sauna designs for good reason. Their cylindrical shape heats up faster than rectangular saunas because hot air naturally circulates along the curved walls, meaning less wasted space and quicker sessions. They also tend to have a smaller footprint, making them a great fit for patios, decks, and smaller backyards.
SaunaLife Ergo Model E7 — Best Overall Barrel Sauna

The SaunaLife E7 Barrel Sauna is our top-selling barrel sauna for a reason. It comfortably seats four people in a 6-foot long barrel constructed from thermally modified Nordic spruce — a wood that lasts up to twice as long as cedar in outdoor conditions. The ergonomically contoured thermo-aspen benches provide genuine lumbar support, which is a feature you won't find in most barrel saunas at any price point.
What really sets the SaunaLife Ergo series apart is the engineering. The barrel includes a watertight asphalt shingle roof kit with drip edges to keep rain out, dual stainless steel floor drains so water never pools inside, and a Wi-Fi-controlled LED light bar for ambiance. At 6'9" of interior standing height, it's significantly taller than most barrel saunas, so you won't feel cramped.
Best for: Couples and small families who want a high-quality barrel sauna that will hold up for years in any climate. Heater sold separately — pair it with a quality electric sauna heater for the best experience.
SaunaLife Ergo Model E6 — Best Compact Barrel Sauna
If you love the SaunaLife Ergo design but need something smaller, the SaunaLife E6 delivers the same premium construction and features in a more compact 5-foot long package. It seats 2–3 people comfortably and is ideal for tighter spaces or solo sauna sessions where you still want room to stretch out.
Like the E7, it's built from thermally modified Nordic spruce with thermo-aspen benches, a shingle roof kit, dual floor drains, and LED lighting. The smaller footprint also means faster heat-up times, which is a nice bonus if you like to sauna on weeknights without a long wait.
Best for: Individuals or couples with limited backyard space who don't want to compromise on build quality.
SaunaLife Ergo Model E8 — Best Large Barrel Sauna
For those who want more room to spread out or regularly sauna with a group, the SaunaLife E8 stretches the Ergo series to a spacious 7-foot length. It seats up to six people and gives you enough bench space to comfortably lie down — a luxury most barrel saunas can't offer. Same premium thermo-spruce construction, same ergonomic aspen benches, same excellent weatherproofing.
If you're considering a glass-front option for a more modern look and natural light, check out the SaunaLife E8G, which features a full tempered glass front wall.
Best for: Families or anyone who entertains regularly and wants a barrel sauna with room for a group.
SaunaLife Ergo Model E7G — Best Glass-Front Barrel Sauna

If you want the E7 experience with a dramatic visual upgrade, the SaunaLife E7G replaces the standard wood front wall with a full tempered glass panel. It opens up the interior completely — natural light floods in during the day, and LED lighting makes it glow at night. Same 4-person capacity, same thermo-spruce construction, same ergonomic aspen benches.
The glass-front design also makes the sauna feel significantly larger inside, which is a real benefit in a barrel where curved walls can sometimes feel tight. If aesthetics matter as much as performance, the E7G is the barrel sauna to beat.
Best for: Buyers who want the most visually striking barrel sauna available, with all the E7's premium build quality plus a modern glass facade.

Best Cabin Saunas for Your Backyard
Cabin saunas offer the most traditional sauna experience and typically provide the most interior space for their footprint. They're easier to customize with shelving configurations, ventilation systems, and larger heaters. If you're looking for an outdoor sauna that feels like a permanent structure rather than a temporary addition, a cabin sauna is usually the way to go.
SaunaLife Model G4 — Best Overall Outdoor Cabin Sauna

The SaunaLife G4 is a spacious 6-person cabin sauna built from premium Nordic spruce with 1.75-inch thick wall beams. It features two side windows and a full-glass front door that flood the interior with natural light, giving it a bright, modern feel that doesn't sacrifice the traditional sauna experience.
The interior dimensions (78.7" × 78.7") give you enough room for comfortable multi-level benching, and the 94.7-inch ceiling height means no ducking. It's compatible with larger heaters up to 10.5kW, which means this sauna heats up fast despite its generous size.
Best for: Families who want a roomy, traditional-looking outdoor cabin sauna with excellent natural light and space for 4–6 people.
SaunaLife Model G2 — Best Mid-Size Cabin Sauna

The SaunaLife G2 is a compact 4-person cabin sauna that offers a genuine Nordic sauna experience in a smaller package. It's built from Nordic spruce with a full tempered-glass front door, giving it an open, airy feel despite the smaller footprint.
At 72" × 64" exterior dimensions, the G2 fits comfortably on most patios or decks without dominating the space. It's a particularly good choice if you want a cabin-style sauna but don't have the footprint for a full 6-person model.
Best for: Couples or small families who want a cabin-style outdoor sauna without a huge footprint.
Dundalk Leisurecraft Georgian Cabin Sauna — Best Canadian-Made Cabin Sauna

The Dundalk Leisurecraft Georgian Cabin Sauna is handcrafted in Ontario, Canada from premium Eastern White Cedar — a naturally rot-resistant wood that's been the standard in Canadian saunas for decades. It seats up to six people and features a classic cabin design with a peaked roof, bronze-tinted tempered glass door, and tongue-and-groove construction throughout.
What makes the Georgian particularly appealing is the option to go completely off-grid. Dundalk offers this sauna with a Harvia M3 wood-burning stove package, which includes everything you need to heat your sauna without electricity. It's the only brand in our catalog that offers true wood-burning compatibility.
Best for: Buyers who want a traditional Canadian-made cabin sauna with the option to go off-grid with a wood-burning stove.
Dundalk Leisurecraft Granby Cabin Sauna — Best Small Cabin Sauna

The Dundalk Leisurecraft Granby is the smaller sibling of the Georgian, seating 2–4 people in a compact cabin footprint. It's built from the same premium Eastern White Cedar with tongue-and-groove construction, a peaked roof, and a bronze-tinted tempered glass door.
The Granby is one of the more accessible cabin saunas in the Dundalk lineup, and its compact size makes it a practical choice for smaller backyards. Like all Dundalk Leisurecraft saunas, it's handcrafted in Canada and built to handle harsh winters.
Best for: Buyers with smaller backyards who want a quality cabin sauna at a more accessible price point.
| Cabin Sauna | Capacity | Wood | Key Feature | Pricing |

Best Modern Cube Saunas for Your Backyard
Cube saunas are the modern answer to the traditional outdoor sauna. With their flat roofs, clean lines, and floor-to-ceiling glass doors, they blend seamlessly into contemporary backyards and look as much like outdoor furniture as they do wellness equipment. SaunaLife's Cube series is the dominant player here, and for good reason — they're built from thermally modified spruce with bronze-tinted tempered glass and LED lighting that looks stunning at night.
SaunaLife Cube CL5G — Best Modern 4-Person Outdoor Sauna

The SaunaLife CL5G is the sweet spot in the Cube series — large enough for four people, small enough to fit on most patios. The bronze-tinted tempered glass door gives the interior a warm amber glow, and the thermo-spruce exterior weathers beautifully over time without needing stain or sealant.
Interior dimensions of 77.2" × 55.1" give you enough room for two-level benching with comfortable legroom. It's compatible with 6–7.5kW heaters like the HUUM DROP 7.5 or Harvia KIP 60W.
Best for: Buyers who want a modern, design-forward outdoor sauna that seats four and looks incredible in a contemporary backyard.
SaunaLife Cube CL3G — Best Budget-Friendly Cube Sauna
The SaunaLife CL3G is the entry point into the Cube series — one of the most accessible modern outdoor saunas on the market. It seats two people and has a surprisingly spacious feel thanks to the 75.4-inch interior ceiling height and the full-glass bronze door.
Don't let the budget-friendly positioning fool you. The CL3G uses the same thermo-spruce construction, 8mm tempered glass, and LED lighting as its larger siblings. It's simply a smaller sauna, not a cheaper one.
Best for: Solo users or couples who want the modern cube aesthetic without the full 4- or 6-person footprint. Also a great option if you have a small patio or deck.
SaunaLife Cube CL7G — Best Large Cube Sauna
The SaunaLife CL7G is the flagship of the Cube series — a spacious 6-person sauna with interior dimensions of 87.5" × 70.8" and an 85.5-inch ceiling height. It's built for people who want the modern cube design but need room for a group. The larger door (27.2" × 74.4") makes entry and exit easier, and the interior can accommodate heaters up to 10.5kW for fast, powerful heat.
If you want the ultimate modern outdoor sauna experience with room for the whole family, this is it.
Best for: Families or entertainers who want the largest cube sauna available with a premium modern design.

Best Pod Saunas for Your Backyard
Pod saunas sit somewhere between barrel saunas and cabin saunas in terms of design. They feature a curved roof (often parabolic or arched) with vertical walls, giving you more usable interior space than a barrel while maintaining an organic, eye-catching shape. They're a great conversation piece and tend to be very efficient at retaining heat.
SaunaLife Model G3 — Best Pod Sauna

The SaunaLife G3 is one of the most visually striking outdoor saunas you can buy. Its distinctive parabolic arch design creates excellent heat circulation while giving the sauna a shape that's truly unique in any backyard. Built from thermo-spruce with a recessed front terrace, the G3 seats up to six people and includes a double-paned tempered glass window for natural light and insulation.
At 86.6" × 94" exterior dimensions, it has a slightly larger footprint than most barrel saunas but rewards you with significantly more interior headroom and bench space.
Best for: Buyers who want a design statement in their backyard — a sauna that performs beautifully and looks unlike anything else on the block.
Dundalk Leisurecraft MiniPOD — Best Value Pod Sauna

The Dundalk Leisurecraft MiniPOD is a 4-person pod sauna handcrafted from Eastern White Cedar in Ontario, Canada. It features a charming oval shape with a front window, peaked entryway, and the same quality tongue-and-groove construction as Dundalk's larger cabin saunas.
Like the Georgian, the MiniPOD is available as part of a complete off-grid package that includes a Harvia M3 wood-burning stove, chimney kit, and all accessories needed to heat your sauna without any electrical hookup.
Best for: Buyers who love the pod shape, want Canadian cedar construction, and may want the option to go off-grid with a wood-burning stove.
| Pod Sauna | Capacity | Wood | Key Feature | Pricing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SaunaLife G3 | 6-Person | Thermo-Spruce | Parabolic arch, stunning design | Get Pricing |
| Dundalk MiniPOD | 4-Person | Eastern White Cedar | Wood-burning off-grid option | Get Pricing |
Best Outdoor Infrared Sauna
All of the saunas covered above are traditional Finnish-style saunas that heat the air with an electric heater or wood-burning stove. But if you prefer infrared heat — where panels warm your body directly rather than heating the cabin — Clearlight builds the only premium outdoor infrared saunas we carry.
Clearlight Sanctuary Outdoor 2 — Best 2-Person Outdoor Infrared Sauna
The Clearlight Sanctuary Outdoor 2 brings full-spectrum infrared outside with weather-rated Cedartec exterior finish and a Mahogany interior. Same patented True Wave™ full-spectrum heaters and Medical Grade Chromotherapy (96 LEDs, 12 colors) as the indoor Sanctuary line, just engineered to stand up to outdoor weather year-round.
A Clearlight Sanctuary Outdoor requires a weather cover (essential accessory) and, like every Clearlight sauna, carries a lifetime residential warranty covering the entire sauna, with a 5-year cabin warranty reflecting outdoor exposure — one of the strongest warranties in the residential sauna industry. Smart Device Control is available across the Sanctuary Outdoor line as an optional add-on for smartphone-based remote operation.
Best for: Infrared enthusiasts who want the Clearlight experience outdoors without sacrificing any features from the indoor Sanctuary line.
Clearlight Sanctuary Outdoor 5 — Best Large Outdoor Infrared Sauna
The Clearlight Sanctuary Outdoor 5 is the 4–5-person outdoor variant — same weather-rated Cedartec exterior, Mahogany interior, True Wave™ full-spectrum heaters, and Medical Grade Chromotherapy, but in a larger footprint for households that want to enjoy outdoor infrared with multiple people.
Like the Outdoor 2, it requires a weather cover and includes Clearlight's lifetime residential warranty covering the entire sauna, with a 5-year cabin warranty reflecting outdoor exposure.
Best for: Families who want a premium full-spectrum infrared experience outdoors with room for multiple people.
| Outdoor Infrared | Capacity | Heat Type | Key Feature | Pricing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clearlight Sanctuary Outdoor 2 | 2-Person | Full-spectrum infrared | Cedartec exterior, Mahogany interior, lifetime warranty | Get Pricing |
| Clearlight Sanctuary Outdoor 5 | 4–5 Person | Full-spectrum infrared | Weather-rated, Medical Grade Chromotherapy, lifetime warranty | Get Pricing |
Best Pre-Assembled Outdoor Sauna
Most outdoor saunas ship as DIY kits that require assembly — typically 4–8 hours with a helper. But if you'd rather have a sauna that arrives ready to use (or nearly so), a pre-assembled model eliminates the work. The trade-off is shipping logistics, since these units ship fully built on a flatbed truck.
SaunaLife Model G6 — Best Pre-Built Outdoor Sauna

The SaunaLife G6 is a fully pre-assembled 5-person outdoor sauna that arrives on a flatbed truck ready to place and plug in. It's built from sawn spruce with double-glazed tempered glass, upper and lower benches, and a full-width glass front wall that makes the interior feel massive.
You're paying for a finished product that requires zero assembly. The double-glazed glass provides excellent insulation, and the interior dimensions (80" × 71.5") rival saunas far more expensive in the luxury segment. It's compatible with heaters up to 10.5kW.
Best for: Buyers who want a premium outdoor sauna without any assembly work and prefer a turnkey experience.
Best Unique Outdoor Sauna
If you want an outdoor sauna that's a genuine showpiece — something that makes your neighbors do a double-take — these are the saunas that break the mold.
SaunaLife Model G11 — Best Hobbit House Sauna

The SaunaLife G11 is unlike any other sauna on this list — or on the market. It's an 8-person sauna suite with a built-in dressing room, connected by a covered porch with a distinctive hobbit-house silhouette. The sauna and dressing room are each 91" × 76" × 91", giving you a total footprint that's essentially two full rooms plus a porch.
Built from thermo-spruce with bronze-tinted tempered glass doors and round porthole windows, the G11 is part outdoor sauna, part architectural sculpture. It's compatible with heaters up to 15kW (like the Harvia Club K15G) for fast heat-up times in the spacious interior.
Best for: Buyers with a large backyard who want a one-of-a-kind sauna experience that doubles as a conversation piece and entertaining space.
| Model | Capacity | Assembly | Key Feature | Pricing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SaunaLife G6 | 5-Person | Pre-assembled | Zero assembly, double-glazed glass | Get Pricing |
| SaunaLife G11 | 8-Person | DIY kit | Hobbit house design, dressing room | Get Pricing |
Best Luxury Modern Outdoor Sauna
If you want an outdoor sauna that rivals anything you'd find at a Nordic spa, the luxury segment delivers build quality, design, and materials that are a clear step above the rest.
Auroom Mira — Best Premium Glass Sauna

The Auroom Mira L is an Estonian-designed outdoor sauna cabin that's in a different league from everything else on this list. Built from thermally modified spruce with a stunning floor-to-ceiling glass front wall, the Mira combines Scandinavian minimalism with serious engineering. Available in natural wood or black finishes, it seats up to five people with generous bench space.
Auroom is one of the most respected sauna manufacturers in Europe, and the Mira showcases why. The modular design means two people can assemble it in about a day, and the thermo-spruce construction is rated for decades of outdoor use without additional treatment. If you're looking for a smaller version, the Auroom Mira S seats two people with the same premium construction.
Best for: Design-conscious buyers who want a European-quality outdoor sauna with stunning architecture and materials that will age beautifully. Browse the full Auroom sauna collection for more options.
Best Canadian-Made Outdoor Sauna
For buyers who specifically want a sauna built in North America using locally sourced materials, Canadian-made saunas offer quality craftsmanship with shorter shipping distances and often more accessible customer support.
Dundalk Leisurecraft Tranquility Barrel Sauna — Best Handmade Canadian Barrel Sauna

The Dundalk Leisurecraft Tranquility is a 6-person barrel sauna handcrafted in Ontario, Canada from premium Eastern White Cedar. It's a true Canadian-made barrel sauna built in small batches with tongue-and-groove construction, a bronze-tinted tempered glass door, and the craftsmanship Dundalk has been known for across North America.
What makes the Tranquility especially compelling is the off-grid package option, which bundles the sauna with a Harvia M3 wood-burning stove, chimney kit, and all accessories needed to heat your sauna without electricity. It's one of the only barrel saunas on the market that supports true wood-burning heat. The MP (multi-porch) version adds a covered front porch for extra space.
Best for: Buyers who want a handcrafted Canadian barrel sauna from cedar with the option to go completely off-grid using a wood-burning stove. Browse all Dundalk Leisurecraft saunas.
What to Consider Before Buying an Outdoor Sauna
Size and Capacity
Think about how many people will use the sauna at once — and be realistic. A 2-person sauna is perfect for solo use with room to stretch out or cozy couples sessions. A 4-person sauna is the most popular size for families. If you entertain regularly, a 6-person or larger model gives you the flexibility to sauna with guests without feeling cramped. Browse our saunas by size: 2-person, 4-person, 6-person, or 8-person.
Sauna Type
The major outdoor sauna shapes each have strengths. Barrel saunas heat up fastest and have the smallest footprint. Cabin saunas offer the most interior space and customization options. Cube saunas deliver modern aesthetics with clean lines. Pod saunas fall in between, with curved roofs and vertical walls. Clearlight's outdoor infrared saunas give you a fundamentally different heating experience — radiant heat that warms your body directly rather than heating the cabin air.
Heating Options
Most traditional outdoor saunas use electric sauna heaters in the 4.5–10.5kW range. If you're interested in wood-burning, Dundalk Leisurecraft saunas are the only models in our catalog that support it — check out our off-grid sauna packages for complete setups. For infrared, every Clearlight Sanctuary Outdoor comes with True Wave™ full-spectrum heaters built in — no separate heater purchase needed.
Wood Type
The two most common outdoor sauna woods are cedar and thermally modified spruce. Cedar is naturally aromatic, rot-resistant, and has been the traditional choice for decades. Thermally modified spruce (thermo-spruce) is heat-treated to remove moisture and sugars, making it harder, more dimensionally stable, and potentially longer-lasting than cedar in wet conditions — without the scent. Clearlight's outdoor saunas use Cedartec exterior (rated for outdoor weather) with Mahogany interior. All three are excellent choices; it comes down to personal preference.
Assembly: DIY Kit vs. Pre-Assembled
Most outdoor saunas ship as flat-pack DIY kits that take 4–8 hours to assemble with a helper. The exception is pre-assembled models like the SaunaLife G6, which arrives fully built on a flatbed truck. DIY kits are more accessible and give you the satisfaction of building your own sauna.
Electrical Requirements
Most traditional outdoor saunas require a dedicated 240V/30–50A circuit installed by a licensed electrician. This is a non-negotiable cost that ranges from $300–$1,500 depending on your home's panel and the distance to your sauna. Wood-burning saunas need no electrical at all. Clearlight Sanctuary Outdoor models run on a dedicated 240V circuit — 240V/15A for the Outdoor 2, 240V/20A for the Outdoor 5. For a complete breakdown, read our sauna electricity cost guide.
Budget
Outdoor sauna pricing depends on size, construction, wood type, and features. Compact cube and pod models sit at the entry point; pre-assembled luxury cabins and premium European imports sit at the top. Budget separately for a heater and for electrical installation if you're going traditional. Get Pricing on any model to see what fits your budget. Every invoice includes a "Pay with Truemed" option — click it and Truemed decides whether your purchase qualifies for HSA/FSA funds. We also offer 0% APR financing through Shop Pay Installments.
Health Benefits of Regular Outdoor Sauna Use
Sauna bathing isn't just relaxation — there's a growing body of clinical evidence supporting significant health benefits from regular use. A landmark 20-year Finnish study published in JAMA Internal Medicine tracked over 2,300 men and found that those who used a sauna 4–7 times per week had a 40% lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to once-weekly users. Cardiovascular benefits include improved endothelial function, reduced blood pressure, and lower risk of sudden cardiac death.
Beyond cardiovascular health, regular sauna use has been shown to improve sleep quality, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, support post-exercise recovery by reducing muscle soreness and inflammation, and may even support immune function through the repeated activation of heat-shock proteins. For a deeper look at the science, read our best indoor saunas guide, which includes a dedicated section on evidence-based health benefits.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to install an outdoor sauna?
Total project cost depends on the sauna itself, the heater (sold separately on most traditional models; built in on Clearlight infrared), and electrical work. Budget $300–$1,500 for a licensed electrician to install a dedicated 240V circuit on top of the sauna and heater costs. Wood-burning saunas eliminate the electrical cost entirely. Get Pricing on any sauna to plan your total project budget.
Do outdoor saunas need a concrete pad or foundation?
Most outdoor saunas don't require a concrete pad. A level, compacted gravel base or deck is sufficient. Barrel saunas typically sit on cradle supports that can rest on any flat surface. Cabin and cube saunas benefit from a gravel pad or concrete pavers for drainage and stability. Pre-assembled saunas like the SaunaLife G6 are the heaviest and may benefit from a reinforced base — check the specific model's weight rating.
What's the difference between cedar and thermo-spruce for outdoor saunas?
Cedar is naturally rot-resistant and aromatic, making it the traditional choice for outdoor saunas. Thermally modified spruce (thermo-spruce) is kiln-treated at high temperatures to remove moisture and sugars, making it harder and more dimensionally stable than untreated wood. Thermo-spruce typically lasts longer than cedar in wet conditions and won't crack, warp, or swell as much over time. Cedar has the classic sauna scent many people love. Both are excellent outdoor choices.
Can I use my outdoor sauna in winter?
Absolutely — winter sauna sessions are a tradition in Finland and one of the best reasons to own an outdoor sauna. Barrel saunas heat up in about 30–45 minutes in winter conditions. Cabin and cube saunas may take slightly longer due to more interior space but compensate with thicker wall insulation. Wood-burning saunas can actually heat up faster than electric in extreme cold. Just make sure your water supply line (if any) is winterized and your electrical connections are rated for outdoor use.
Do I need a permit to install an outdoor sauna?
Permit requirements vary by municipality. Some areas treat outdoor saunas like sheds (under a certain square footage, no permit needed). Others require electrical permits for the 240V circuit, building permits for the structure, or both. Check with your local building department before installation. As a general rule, the electrical work will require a permit in most jurisdictions regardless of the sauna itself.
Can I use HSA or FSA funds for an outdoor sauna?
Every invoice at Sauna Republic includes a "Pay with Truemed" option. You click it, complete Truemed's health assessment, and if Truemed approves, the transaction completes with HSA/FSA funds. Truemed determines eligibility per customer — we don't make that call.
