Synergistic Effects of Concentrated Growth Factor and 1064 nm Low-Level Laser Therapy on Bone Healing

Synergistic Effects of Concentrated Growth Factor and 1064 nm Low-Level Laser Therapy on Bone Healing

Study Overview

Description: This study aimed to evaluate whether concentrated growth factor (CGF) and photobiomodulation (PBMT, also known as low-level laser therapy LLLT) have a synergistic effect on the bone healing process.

Source: PubMed

Summary

Participants: 15 Japanese big-ear white rabbits. Four 8 mm critical-sized bone defects were created on each rabbit's calvarium.

Intervention: The bone defects were randomly divided into four groups:

  • Control: Filled with an autologous blood clot.
  • CGF: Filled with concentrated growth factor.
  • LLLT: Filled with an autologous blood clot and received Nd:YAG low-level laser irradiation.
  • CGF + LLLT: Filled with concentrated growth factor and received laser irradiation.

Methods: Rabbits were randomly selected and sacrificed at 4, 6, and 8 weeks postoperatively. The calvariums were harvested and scanned by micro-CT to calculate the volume of new bone formation.

Conclusion

Both CGF and LLLT effectively promoted osteogenesis, but their combined application did not show a synergistic effect. The pro-osteogenic effect of Nd:YAG low-level laser irradiation was superior to that of CGF alone, and also superior to the combined effect of the two.
